Alternatives for QuickBooks

From the last major round of discussion on this, I had extracted:

Akaunting (free, open-source, aimed at small business and freelancers)

Wave Accounting (Accounting software is free, Payroll and Online Payment Services are both paid add-ons)

NCH Express Accounts Accounting Software (free version for very small business, 5 or fewer employees, very reasonable 1-time payment for current Plus or Basic version, with option to have a “perpetual update” subscription for $21.50 per quarter)

But since that was in 2023, I thought I'd ask if anyone has found other "favorite" alternatives.

The client needs only very basic accounting software as he does not use the vast majority of the "bells and whistles" of QuickBooks. He'd also like something to handle a small payroll, whether integrated or standalone [I believe integrated would be preferrred, but I haven't checked back in with him yet].

Many of my customers have made the swap to Xero.

The only other one I don't see on this list is FreshBooks, which is specifically aimed at freelancers.

Xero has the additional benefit of being part of the Xero ecosystem, which gets to full blown ERP level complexity if you need it.

I've heard that Patriot Software is good.

Over here in the UK, xero is really being pushed with advertising. Every damned hour it feels like.
