Strange Problem

I have a Windows 7 SP1 desktop showing very strange issues. User first reported IE would open and crash immediately, I sent them instructions to reset there internet browser. Now the computer is doing the following...

- IE still does the same (open/crash even in safe mode)
- Office2013 apps crash after opening - with a repair office message
- Sage loads and closes again
- When I open Services.msc the default extended tab everything is just blank. If I click standard tab I can see the services, 5 or 6 automatic services will not start included software protection.
- Click Uninstall Program does nothing

Firstly we booted safe mode and uninstalled Rapport, Bitdefender 2015, ran autoruns, TDSSKiller and MalwareBytes removed some PUP. The system was still not happy to we did a system restore back a few days and everything was ok.

After some basic checks we decided to reinstall BitDefender as it didn't seem happy. After reinstall Bitdefender detected a PUP MyScrapNook and removed but required a restart. After restarting all the problems are back :(

So I ran MalwareBytes again which removed some traces of PUP still not working. I decided to revert back to my pre-work clone and start again, the problem is now when I try to do the system restore it says I have no restore points so I need to fix the issue.

Can anyone think of anything that would cause applications to no longer load and general buggyness. We have tried SFC and various other things. Would an inplace upgrade be worth a try? Normally I would just do a format reload but the computer has loads of accounts software that would need resintalling so would rather try and fix.

Nope, HDD is fine.
I ran combofix and that removed a few more PUP keys but still no dice.
I tried to create a new user but clicking all the links in control panel nothing happens, what is going on???

First I'd try and check the event logs to gather any appropriate insight. Then, I'd be inclined to do a complete chkdsk on the small chance there is a corrupted block. Then I'd try a registry and file permission reset on the also slim chance that either a registry key or support file has been locked by the permissions being removed.

Normally I wouldn't respond after metanis, slaters and nline mention the AIO tool but a big X4. This tool is at the top of my bag of tricks.

Also, don't rule out the HDD because it passed diags. I've seen that plenty of times over the years from mainframes, mini's, micro's and PC's.

See this post. 'No Fix - No Fee' and a wayward hard drive

Good luck, man. This is one of those looong service calls we all hate.

Yup. If I suspect Gsmartcontrol didn't do its job...I will fire up UBCD and use the manufacturer tool. Sometimes it diagnoses the drive as bad when a different utility came up clean.

it really sounds like a hijack to me. i saw something similar a while ago. i should have just N&P because it really made a mess of the OS but instead i spent the time to manually replace the system files. Probably aio might have fixed it for me....

Thanks everyone, the tweeking aio tool seems to have done the job. Everything started working again around step 1/2 so looks like it was a permissions issue.

Im not sure how I have managed to miss out on this tool all this time, its look really good and has saved me.

I found out about that tool on here also. It's saved me from having to do a nuke and pave a couple of times.
