STOP 7B After StorageCraft Install - How to disable service?

Ok, so I go to install StorageCraft ShadowProtect desktop on my test rig (Windows 7 Pro x64) reboot and I'm met with an ugly STOP 0x0000007B error. I can only assume that it's the storage craft service that is causing this so I need to disable it.

I know in XP I could boot into a recovery console and run listsvc to find the services and disable them. This doesn't seem to be the same in Windows 7. Any ideas?

Edit: within WinRE it says I have no system restore points, WHAT! I know system restore is enable on this machine, it's MY rig.

Oi!!

Last known config that worked?

What's SMART looking like on this drive via a Linux Live CD? Did StorageCraft hose your access to System Restore?

Drive SMART is good. It's a 120GB Kingston HyperX SSD. It must have been ShadowProtect because I made a recovery point, uninstalled Acronis and rebooted and after I rebooted ShadowProtect still said Acronis was installed so I followed their KB to remove the Acronis driver from the registry and rename the driver and rebooted immediately, all went well. Then I installed ShadowProtect without doing anything else and rebooted immediately when prompted *bam!* BSOD!

So far I have tried:

  1. Safe Mode
  2. Last known good config
  3. System restore (said it was disabled)
  4. Changing the SATA mode from AHCI to IDE (in case there was some conflict with the intel AHCI driver.)
  5. Researched into listsvc and found out that it's no longer included in WinRE and to load the registry hives offline :(
  6. Looked at my tower and realized it's way too much of a pain to remove my SSD (Azza case, whole front has to come off, like 16 screws, not fun.) :(
  7. Emailed ShadowProtect support, hoping they can help!

Can you slave the drive snag the hive?

Yes I can, but like I said in my previous post, it's a royal PITA! I will have to do that tomorrow (I had planned on testing ShadowProtect all day) there goes that plan!

I was just actually installing ShadowProtect on that machine first as a test before I fully delved into it tomorrow so I wouldn't waste time installing things. I wasn't rushing or anything and rebooted between all steps, I just don't understand technology sometimes!

How goes it with this?

I'd forgotten about this: Win7 makes a backup of the registry every so often and puts it in C:\Windows\system32\config\Regback. Rename the current versions in C:\Windows\system32\config then copy in the latest ones in the Regback folder (check the size first). Might allow you to access your restore points in WinRE...

Can she come up in safe mode?
I've had that happen in the past on a clients server....some prior tech must have installed some Acronis software.....for some reason Storagecraft didn't detect it upon installation (it usually will detect the snapman file entries and warn you ahead of time)...I went and rebooted..blam! Blue screen. Got up in safe mode to clean out the file and edit the registry, and all was fine.

Wondering if something didn't take when you did edit the registry or delete the snapman file...so wondering if safe mode works so you can get back in and double check.

Nope. All modes result in a 7B BSOD, this sucks.. definitely not a good first impression.

I renamed snapman file to .old so it couldn't be that.

I'd be surprised if 7B is service. It's usually inaccessible boot code. So safe mode and registry fixes like "last known" won't fix it.

It maybe that the storagecraft thing is entirely coincidental.

I'd be looking at the usual boot fixes - fixmbr, fixboot, chkdsk, looking to see if the partitions are still there, HDC driver etc.

BTW if it was a service or registry related then MS's DART/ERD disks are invaluable.

Well I thought it was a service, but it's not. Just loaded the registry offline, disabled all StorageCraft services, and still a stop 7B. It's not the MBR b/c I get a brief glimpse of the Windows loading screen. I can only assume it's a driver now.

EDIT: Frig I disabled the drivers too, still not booting AHHHHHHHH

OK, I got it working! Here's what I did:

  1. Restored the registry from the system32/config/regback folder
  2. Booted the computer up no problem
  3. Uninstalled Intel RST & Rebooted
  4. Reinstalled ShadowProtect & Rebooted
  5. It booted right up

So there you have it, apparently StorageCraft conflicts with the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.

Yea it's a pain, but if nothng else has worked that ought to do it.

Maybe it was an older version of RST? I have ShadowProtect running on my PC's without any problems, and they all use RST.

RST won't show up in the Intel Driver Update Utility. You'll have to download the latest version from the Intel website (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...t=Intel®+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel®+RST))

Nope, was the very latest version, I recall updating it about a month ago. Now that I've done a backup though, I can install it again and find out. Then I can test the restore feature :)
