Bullet point story, because it's fast and works.
  • I don't need business advice. (in this thread ;) )
  • I am looking at opening a roller skating rink (done the research and business planning needed)
  • I am working on pricing out everything and getting the techy "fun stuff"
  • I will be using a custom Win10 PC with spotify, mic, mixer, and the works to get music bouncin' on the skate floor.
  • I am curious about doing RGB lighting that'll bounce with the music rather than just random flashing that comes built into the units in most entertainment facilities.

I was pointed towards "Light Organs" that take in an Aux source and splits the 5 frequencies.

Curious of other techniques.

Let's assume money isn't real. (for the sake of learning about different technologies out there)

First check out this:
HeavyM uses projection mapping using a standard (or pro) projector. It will map to sound and MIDI.

If you want to do RGB LED's in a quality way then you need to be using WS2811/WS2812 LED's or similar with DMX controllers.
I would recommend a Sandevices E682 Artnet/E1.31 controller only because I have 4 of them!

As for lighting control software:

Madrix is the gold standard with a gold price:

There are a few varied options here in the 'middle' for control software.. just search "Lighting Control Software".

Vixen Lights is free and open source - being able to dynamically have it change to music is not quite there yet.

Here's some examples of Vixen on my house, Halloween '16:

Or an excellent example of Christmas usage (Also using Vixen):

Hope all that helps!

Wah ohh, that's a lot of info right there!

Should also be clear, I dont want to spend my life sitting and programming the lights to songs. I need either:

  • a computer system to do it for me.
  • a collection of "free coder slaves" to sit and program all the songs for me ;)

Ya, I hear ya.. a "DJ" solution sounds like it fits the bill.

Check out:
Elation
Blizzard Lighting
Sunlight Suite 2

But I have never used them personally.

Madrix will "auto" the lights to music, too..

1981 me is pretty excited to hear this! My teenage buddies and I spent a lot of time at our local skating rink.

I think there might still be one around here somewhere, but 2017 me would probably just get an expensive ride to the emergency room.

Good luck!
