Sonicwall TZ 205 driving me nuts...WLAN to LAN

X0 LAN at default 192.168.168.1 address
W0 WLAN default 172.16.31.1

I'm running through trying to bridge the W0 to X0...Network....Interfaces...edit W0, IP assignment to layer 2 bridged mode, bridged to X0 interface.
Hit "OK" and I get "Error: Index of the interface: Portshield interfaces can not be assigned to L2 bridge pair.

Seems gotta run the portshield wizard and do something...but not familiar with the portshield wizard.

Need wireless to communicate with X0 LAN...server is running DHCP, so DHCP on the Sonicwall is disabled.

It's been years since I had to deal with Sonicwall but I seem to remember having to unassign the port shield interfaces.

That's looking like it...makes sense. I used to work with Sonicwalls back with the original old SOHO3 models. Didn't have to know this Portshield stuff.

Now..what are the ramifications of disabling that service on all interfaces?

If it says No Link in red on the interfaces, then you can safely disabled them, since there is no cable plugged into them.

What I mean is...I gotta read up on what the purpose of that service is..what it actually does. There's a "wizard" to set it up too. Want to find out what that particular services function is. Almost seems like a VLAN type service...to do "port based VLANs". Sound right?

I find the Sonicwall interface and nomenclature very unintuitive.

Glad you got it working but was wondering why you needed it bridged rather than just routing between the interface subnets? Am I missing something or did I misread your post?

I think Nerm is right. You just need them to route between each other. I think the wireless chooses a network of 172.16.x.x, if I remember.
I will return with more info.

Hi YeOldeStoneCat,

The problem is DHCP is enabled for that wireless interface. You have to disable it first before you can make changes and bridge it. Sonicwall is very particular about this.

When you click Configure under the W0 interface (under Network), you can choose from Static to Layer2 Bridged Mode under IP assignment and under Bridged to: X0.
That should take care of that!
