Some clients just aren't worth it.

Nige, you did nothing wrong in my book. You don't have a store front on a public street. One can refuse service to anyone. The key is to not say why. All you have to say is you can't help them and to find someone else. If it as me I'd just steer them to Worst Choice or some other big box.

The importance to not giving any reason is someone can take a legitimate reason and spin it out of control if they're one of those "protected" classes.

customers are always right. After all, they pay your salary.
.

Years ago, in another life, I mentioned that to my then manager as to why I did something. He came back with they do pay your wages but they are often not right. In fact they can often be very wrong which can cause big problems for everyone. The key is they are the customer. This is where experience can come into play in getting them think they came up with the right plan after some discussion. But as has been mentioned many times on here, sometimes they need to be sent on their way.

But therein lies a very dangerous rub, thanks to all of this stuff boiling around for LGTBQ rights, you don't have rights anymore as a business owner.
Indeed, but I personally don't care if a customer is [insert group]. I have customers from the gay community and never had an issue. I have Latino customers and also never had an issue. Even if I chose not to do service for them because that balked at my prices or didn't like the answer to a solution they were given. The same for the black community, no issue. The only group that tries to start a scene is the millennial group of self-entitled people - mainly college folk. I'll post that story in my WTF moment of the week thread.

The main color I see about clients is GREEN as in $$$. The more of a pain they are the more I charge. I do have a couple of ex-clients that are blocked on my phone and will not service them again.
When you do not have a shop you can weed out clients as you wish. But it has NEVER been about any "protected" class of people. I still feel everyone is just a human being and deserves to exist in peace and deserves initial respect with everyone else. If I encounter idiots I just move on. You reap what you sow I think is the saying.

We TOTALLY agree with the millennial statement - self-serving, self-entitled.

I hate that im technically classed as a millenial (born in 87), im nothing like them! I have never had an attitude like they do

@Your PCMD Entitled Millennials in college? I hate to do this, because it makes us all feel old but...

You do realize I'm among the oldest of the Millenials (Gen Y), born in 1981 and I'm 38... If you're having issues with college aged kids those are Gen Z. Though I suppose the youngest of the Millenials could still be in college now... and they keep moving the year goal posts around.

But seriously, my generation has been a whipping post for everything, don't blame us for the actions of the brats coming up behind us! ;)

Sometimes, I look out the window at the rain and wish I didn't live in England. Then I read something like this...

And you really shouldn't, because in the US if you aren't involved in the drug trade, and you aren't suicidal, despite what the news says you're most likely to get shot by a cop. And that isn't some dig at our men and women in uniform, that's how safe it is here.

You're actually vastly more likely to find someone throwing acid on you in the UK than you are to be shot by a crazy person in the US.

But back down on Earth, I'd say emigrating because of the weather probably isn't a good reason! ;) But considering how many ex-pats from the UK that seem to land out here in Arizona... perhaps the rain really is that bad! :D

I guess you're right - the grass is always greener and so on. Of course, people not getting shot isn't news, so all we ever hear over here is the stories about the fruit-loops with the semi-automatics suddenly going crazy in some school or shopping centre. Kind of colours your judgment. Still - I have to say: I have never, not once, worried about getting shot anywhere here. Not in business, not in personal/social life - and certainly not by the Police. So I guess it's worth putting up with a little rain...

@Mick, such is the nature of the propaganda we all consume... it's not news anymore. There's usually no nefarious purpose behind it other than inflammatory headlines generate clicks. When the media people get paid per click, this is the result.

And at the risk of derailing things...

I've been threatened with weapons many times in my life, guns are included. But, the most threatening individuals I've had to deal with on the gun issue were cops at a traffic stop. The police in the US literally get away with murder at times. That's a real issue that needs solving. But, in terms of casualties, still a very small problem in the grand scheme of things. Officers of the law having an all too often thankless, dangerous, and I'd argue abusive job just boils law enforcement down to something that's all but impossible, and consumes good people while it's at it. That's a hard one...

But if it's not guns, it's knives, if it's not knives it's acid, if it's not acid, it's trucks, if it's not...

Intelligent minds intent on doing harm will do it. Controlling inanimate objects is irrational, and here in the US we do seem to have a cultural predisposition to violent behavior that's worse than anywhere else in the world. So that's a very real thing, but even with all of that as a backdrop, I've never felt unsafe.

But never forget you guys have the NHS, I know it's not perfect but it provides a ton to your people. If we had the ability to actually treat the mentally ill like you guys do, I suspect we'd have a huge drop in these events. But if you want an oddly objective view of the mass shooting problem, there's a recent article in the OPINION section of the LA Times: https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2019-08-04/el-paso-dayton-gilroy-mass-shooters-data I'm not a huge fan of the proposed solutions, but the data analysis is spot on. This is a complex issue the US needs to get its head around.

I don't have any answers, I just wish the powers that be would screw their brains in instead of pushing talking points.

so all we ever hear over here is the stories about the fruit-loops with the semi-automatics suddenly going crazy in some school or shopping centre.
I will admit, I am more aware of my surroundings when I go out. Not paranoid just more observant. Not to the extent that I wont sit at a restraunt with my back to the door.

@Porthos, you're braver than I. But I'm a military brat, vigilance has been bred into me. So there are little things like that I do that I don't even think about. So I'm probably more than a little biased. I'll never sit with my back to a door... ever...

Sometimes, I look out the window at the rain and wish I didn't live in England. Then I read something like this...

It's stil safe here and we don't have crazy people running around with guns, but people are a lot less trusting now and a lot of people are taking gun lessons at least in my area. The local police are even promoting the classes every month. It wasn't like this before that guy got elected in 2016 and the propaganda that has come from it. Because of that I'm just trying to say that especially now you should think twice before walking onto people's property unexpected and yelling at them or bad things can happen.

I didn't want to hijack this thread or make it political. Just wish we could all just get along and be respectful as well.

But seriously, my generation has been a whipping post for everything, don't blame us for the actions of the brats coming up behind us! ;

Every "generation" has their whipping post label. I'm from the Yuppie era. And I was nothing like the stereo type that got bashed about. My daughter gets annoyed every time I make a comment about Millenials. "Dad, remember I'm one of them". She's not even close to being one

@Markverhyden, yeah I know the more things change the more they stay the same and all that.

In the meantime I take a sort of perverse pleasure in informing Baby Boomers that Millennials are pushing 40 now, and the oldest of us have kids in High School. So those "whippersnappers", are middle aged voters and tax payers now.

The resulting brain lurch is pretty funny to watch, because as I indicated in my earlier post... it tends to make everyone feel old. Millennials in particular age VERY quickly when hit with this reality. So much so there's a college humor skit on it... I'd link it, but I can't seem to find it... it was hilarious.

Keep your opinions, rants, religious/political views to your self.
My hope is that we can do that here. I've observed comments from posters on both sides of the political system on this board. I don't think this is the place for that. As much as I'd like to chime in when I read certain things here, I refrain. One because it's lost mental focus and lost time. Two, because there's about a 90% chance I'm NOT going to change the mind of someone with an opposing viewpoint. And finally three: I think it will hurt everyone on the board because if people are in conflict with each other here because of their political views then they'll be less likely to help each other.
