software won't install on XP Tablet edition

I'm working with a Ford garage and some of their diagnostic software refuses to work on XP Tablet edition. When I try to run the app, it reports that it can't connect to the data file. So, I was asked to install XP Pro for them on this tablet PC.

I'm a bit perplexed about this though. XP Tablet is just a superset of XP Pro, so I'm not sure why the software is refusing to run. Even stranger is that the software vendor specifically states it supports XP Pro SP2 or newer and Vista...and specifically states it does not support XP Tablet edition.

So, in the interest of keeping costs down for my client, I am wondering what part of the XP Tablet software may cause a program designed for XP Pro not to run.
I wonder if there is a quick registry hack that may be able to fool this software into thinking it is running on XP Pro instead of Tablet.

Interesting question. I just spent a few minutes trying to find an answer, but came up short. I'd like to know this as well. Can you call the vendor and ask? At the very least, maybe someone in support has a workaround.

Lenovo X60

I'm using a Lenovo X60 tablet that used to have Windows XP Professional Tablet PC Edition but I had to upgrade it to Vista for some reason. It currently has Windows 7 installed. It's Penabled by Wacom.

From the link below, it looks like programs that run on XP Pro should run on Tablet PC as well.

Could it have to do with networking? That's one of the areas in which Tablet differs from Pro....

I was surprised that this program didn't work in XP tablet and I couldn't come up with anything on Google searches either.

The program is IDS version 65, part of Ford's vehicle diagnostic software, I wonder if Rick is onto something with networking...how is that different?

Sigh. Looks like I was wrong about it being different in that area. Mea culpa. I must having been thinking about Media Center. At my age, it gets hard to remember who's what. Sorry if I led you astray.

Have you checked Windows Firewall (or other security) settings? You may need to add the app to the exceptions list.

My client already disabled windows firewall and uninstalled thier AV thinking it may help, so no 3rd party firewall either.

I'm re-DLing it just in case it was something corrupt in the download. But, the zip decompressed without errors, so I don't think the problem is there.

I think I may have gotten it to work. I did a full uninstall and cleaned out remnants in the program files folder and registry, then reinstalled. Seems to be working (well getting father then what the repair manager showed me when I picked it up). I'll stop in tomorrow and see if it works with the scanning tools.

I still don't understand why they would say not supported in XP Tablet. And, I can't believe the software company's tech support couldn't get it to work.
