Soft phone

The best softphone apps for mobile (android/apple) are made by Acrobits. I have yet to use an app more polished and stable than Groundwire, but their basic Acrobits Softphone works just as well.

For computer based softphones I would recommend any of the Counterpath products all day long. Bria is top notch and works on Windows, OSX, and Linux (though I've never used the Linux client). They also make softphone apps for mobile. When I get around to testing them I might change my mind about Acrobits (from what I see at least).

I use 3CX Phone on both my computers and Android phone... works pretty well for a free app. The Android version can integrate with the phone and be used in place of the normal dialer. I had some problems with it on my Samsung Galaxy 1 where it would mix up the earpiece and the speakerphone, but it works perfectly on the Samsung Galaxy S3.

I'm assuming you don't use the Google Voice App because this would keep you logged in and may cause the PBX not to function correctly. Am I right?

Right. The Google Voice accounts that are linked to my PBX never have and never will be associated with any Google Voice app on my phone. That would definitely break the PBX.

Nothing at all wrong with using a softphone on an Android/iPhone though. In fact, I think you can even set it up so that your softphone connects back to the PBX even outside your local network. I haven't tried setting that up yet, but it's an interesting (and potentially battery-draining/data-hogging) idea.

And it can be quite dangerous if precautions are not taken.
If your softphone supports it, you can set your PBX to use TCP as well as UDP - this would help with the battery life issue.

voip provider

True story. That's one reason I haven't attempted it yet. I don't want to accidentally open my PbX to the world. I do need to figure it out though as I have a friend and potential co-worker out of Chicago who is interested in setting up a PBX and would need the ability for me to be able to connect to his PBX from my location to help him with his remote support workload.

I use Voipphone for one of my lines and netplan for another. Both very cheap. I have a Linksys SPA941 but never use it with my calls diverting to my mobile. I want something that links to my Google apps accounts so I know who is calling plus my computer is pairs with my Jawbone headset so I am hands free for support when they need it.

I will try express talk, I am testing SJphone just now.

Thanks

Hey,

once you have decided on a softphone, you should be able to export contact and numbers from GA and import them into the softphone so you can see who is calling. I don't know if there is specifically a softphone that integrated with google apps. Do you use outlook? if so i believe most softphones will have a feature to integarte with your contact from outllok - should work even with gsync. Let us know who you get on with ExpressTalk.

Cheers
