Solution: use Western Digital Drive Utilities to put the HDD to sleep after a set amount of time (90 mins max), or turn off sleep.

Do not bother installing WD Discovery program. It's not useful.

Got an external USB 3.0 8TB Western Digital HDD that is giving me a headache when attached to my laptop (Legion 5 Pro).

It goes to sleep after a brief period. When it's sleeping, it causes Explorer, Hardware Ejector, Diskpart/CMD, Empty Recycle Bin and more to take like 10 seconds to process because it has to wake the HDD up. It's super annoying. What can I do? Modify some setting to keep it awake at all times when the computer is on?

Turning off Power Management on 6 different things doesn't work:

Damn, the issue persists, but not nearly as bad.

Emailed Western Digital for help. Also asked WD Community for help.

Here's all of the hubs I have the Power Management featured turn off on:

The AMD USB 3.0 host controller has Power Management, too.

Worried about having so many Power Managements turned off!

Edit: turned it off and the HDD still goes to sleep. Grr!

Did you check the power options? In this picture, HDD sleep after 20 minutes and USB suspend:

That is an option! It's not ideal as it applies to all USB devices (same with turning off Power Management on the USB hubs).

I found that Western Digital has a program for my drive. It has the ultimate solution!
