Severe Problems with Windows August Updates

I had two of the issue #3 issues this week. Didn't know about the bulletin so I had to manually track that one down (Thanks for the heads up on these btw):

Known issue 3
Microsoft is investigating behavior in which systems may crash with a 0x50 Stop error message (bugcheck) after any of the following updates are installed:
2982791 MS14-045: Description of the security update for kernel-mode drivers: August 12, 2014

I had 13-15 Windows updates to do on these machines and had to apply each one separately to determine which update was bombing the system. After seeing the stop 0x50 error on KB2982791 deleting fntcache.dat worked and applying the update went in OK. I was able to recover the system with System restore points each time it failed.

I had 3 Win7 64bit system that morning, I used a recovery disk. I did not get to the BSOD to find what was the error. Only later in the afternoon did I read up on it on the KB.

Saw this on a W7 64bit PC today, 0x50 bsod before logon - happened in safe mode too.

Following MS instructions (see link in first post) solved the problem but, as safe mode wasn't working either, had to delete fntcache.dat via Command Prompt in sys recovery.

Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks

I would just like to thank Microsoft for this update and for creating a lot of customers to keep all of us busy. :)

So who's gonna refund the money to the poor customers that have had to take their computer to a repair shop? Microsoft?
Don't think so, they just say Oops!!.
It's time they were held accountable.

Last set of updates they pushed seems to be causing major problems with windows 8 systems they boot to black screen with cursor.
I have had 6 so far Microsoft is really dropping ball on QA testing i can't see how these patches got through testing.

When I do a clean install I do all the 200 or more updates
then turn the suckers off it never ends
My work computer I turned updates off 4 years ago just choose updates I want. been the the most stable computer I have ever had.

Well I got one in this morning, W7 64bit PC with 0x50 bsod ,safe mode too.

Following MS instructions (see link in first post) and it did not solve the problem.

Did a full virus check also.
No safe mode, won't repair from Win 7 disk.
Anyone any other ideas, apart from re-install.

Had one of these today but I'll look at it tomorrow morning.

Removing the fonts database seemed to fix it for me on a computer we had in a few days ago.

Same here.

Had one a couple of days ago. Instructed the customer to boot to the rescue partition, connected remotely and removed FNTCACHE.DAT (and FontCache3.0.0.0.dat and FontCache-System.dat, just in case) from his system drive, rebooted normally and un-installed the offending updates.
