Anyone know of some free monitoring software that I can put on a server and it will notify me if the internet connection goes down, etc. Please let me know!
How would it notify you if the internet connection is down?
Nevermind, dumb question! I guess the software on your end could ping it in intervals or something. Or I know in old times, there must have been software that sent pages with admin alerts...now it'd be sms texts.
The first 10 "sensors" are free. This system will monitor nearly anything on a network. I used it to ping a website and a workstation for several months for a customer. I was surprised at how often their website was unavailable from my monitoring location.
It is possible to set it up with multiple monitoring sites if you wish to monitor from multiple locations/ISPs. It is also very configurable in what type of alerts and when to send them. I used email to SMS Text messages so I could receive them quickly on my phone.
It is also possible to ping even on a dynamic IP using port forwarding and www.no-ip.com or www.dyndns.com to translate a domain name to the current IP of a router and on to a machine. Of course, that has some security implications to consider.
Well first it was to monitor if the intenet goes down, then it was to also monitor some services etc.
To me I would spend a few dollars and have peace of mind. Now if it's your server then it's your call, if it's a customers server/networking then spend the dollars and roll the cost in.
Sounds like a solution for something like Hounddog and you can monitor each and every item you want.
