Seagate class action lawsuit over 3tb drive failures

And an insane increase in cost if it is decided that they are liable for the loss of data.

If the losses result from Seagate knowingly and/or fraudulently selling drives that fall short of their advertised failure rate - then there should be some level of liability resulting from that deception.

That may result in more expensive drives. But hard drives are cheaper now than they have ever been and people still bought them when they cost more than today. Or perhaps instead of significant cost increases, there should just be more truthful advertising. It would be fun to see drives rated on their packages in terms of realistic and easy to understand lifetimes rather than crazy MTBF rates. "Should I choose the 24 month hard drive for $50? Or the five year hard drive for $125?" That would be nice to see.

I know this is specifically about Seagate's 3tb drives, but I feel many hard drives fail prematurely and think it might be OK for that whole industry to have a bit of a wake up call.
