Restrict Access to Printer Preference

Hey guys I have several windows 7 computers and server 2003. How can I prevent uses from adjusting printer preferences? I did the control panel and hide the device and printers in the start menu but when the user goes to say Microsoft Word and select the printer they can still adjust the printer preferences there. I also adjusted the security tab in the server to allow print only but it does not seem to work. Is there a way to restrict access to it?

From the share properties, assuming it is shared from the server, (dunno since you have old 2k3 server...32 bit, with probably 64 bit clients...)..anyways...from the share permissions ,uncheck "Manage"....leaving only "Print" permissions.

Thanks for the reply but I did try that but it did not work. I guess it cannot be done with my current setup.

Are the workstations printing through the servers print share...or printing direct to printer via IP?

Windows Server 2003 extended support ended on July 14, 2015
I would worry more about migrating to a supported OS.

Why would you want to? It's perfectly legitimate to allow users to adjust their own printer preferences. Requirements vary between print jobs and users need to be able adjust the printer to suit the job.

It's a pretty common request by clients. Some examples....clamp down on who can print color...cuz it's expensive.

Back to the OPs issue...if what I mentioned doesn't work (same thing Willie also later linked)...guessing it's just a compatibility issue 'tween old Server 03 and Win7 clients. Problem goes away with an 08r2 or newer server.

If it's a decent multifunction device then it will have user/account tracking built into it, so you can run reports and see who has been printing what etc.
You can usually also allow b&w printing to anyone but lock down colour to those that know the code.

For colors..my approach is to create two shares from the server. One for B&W (for everyone), and another for color....(for a limited group). For those that have simpler color printers that don't have department codes.

Thanks for the response guys. My boss actually wants everyone to print on double side to cut back on wasting paper.
