Reselling MCAfee Antivirus

Firstly, please forgive the levels of sarcasm here. [emoji3]

Most techs see mcafee, avg and norton as old friends, well, more like adversaries. [emoji3]

Av comparatives is your friend. I use antivirussales a lot. Just remember to put the clients name in the notes box as you purchase. Then you have a record of who you sold it to.

Not forgetting my current fave emsisoft, which uses Bitdefender defs as well as it's own.

Mcafee ?
Ah, bless [emoji5]️

I love mcafee and norton 360..... As they get me lots of work.

Having said this, it's entirely possible, in an infinite universe, that they may turn the corner someday and top the removal lists.

The boss of Norton has admitted they had "taken their eye off the ball" recently, so a revamped product could easily arise.

Norton! I love the way sometimes you get a machine with a virus and it's managed to half uninstall Norton leaving something that is completely useless.

Best bit is though even after totally removing the virus, the machine won't connect to the Internet until you run the Norton removal tool and get rid of the program entirely.

Customers response is normally something along the lines of "well the young bloke at PC World told me this was the best A/V available" :)

Watch out for false positives with Bitdefender though. I have seen it break line of business apps more then once. It does not blatantly do it either, say by quarantining a file. It just makes thing stop working, the only way I found around this is removing it completely. It used to be part of my maintenance package, but not anymore.

What LOB apps. I've just starting moving to Bitdefender.

ACS Suite and some sort of real estate LOB app. The real estate one was resolved before I came onboard so I did not deal with it directly. Though it sounded exactly the same as the issue I had with BD and ACS.

Only LOB app I've run into problems with, are design/fabrication apps. Solidworks, and OMAX Waterjet. That was back a few versions ago.

We have almost 600 installs out there across many different business types.
Doing exclusions requires more config with BD...in addition to just adding directories, you often have to specify an EXE for a process.

Only other issue I've had with BD...was with certain models of Dell laptops with their drive encryption software. Latitude 5530 and 5430 models of last years vintage..with shipped image. Hampers bootup pretty bad...can take an hour to log in at times...so they won't co-exist. This years equiv Lat models...no problem

I find it funny how people are still paying for norton and macafee. i can somewhat understand when comcast or charter give it for free. end users dont know whats what; its free and right there. But paying. This week had 3 onsite virus removal that people were pay for these. I said this is half your problem. Ended up putting avira free on there are they are better protected with fewer resources taken up. all were so happy.

Yes, because Norton, properly installed, is not completely useless. *cough*

I don't want to hijack this thread but it is a related subject.

Here on Long Island the two broadband providers are Optimum Online and Verizon FiOS. Optimum has about 80% of my customers and has now switched it's FREE AV offering from CA (Computer Associates) to McAfee Internet Security. FiOS is also offering McAfee but for a fee.

Up until now I have been recommending the following free AV for my clients:

LowRisk - XP - BitDefender Free
Vista and 7 - MSE
Win8 - Windows Defender

For those at higher risk because of careless online behavior I have recommended adding Malwarebytes Premium ($24.95 3PC's x 1 yr.)

When I look at AV Comparatives I only see subtle differences between the offerings.

Question:
Should I recommend McAfee for my Optimum Online clients?
