I'm looking for a replacement keyboard for an HP Envy TS 17-153cl. Newegg has them for $45.99, but ships from China and arrives in 9-18 days. Laptop Keyboards has the non-backlit for $88.88 +$4.85, the backlit being $10 more. Not a fan of fleabay, so other alternatives are preferred. Suggestions?

This. Take a look at the partsurfer.hp.com for consumer models or partsurfer.hpe.com for enterprise models. You have to grind through the part number (if you have it), the laptop serial number, the laptop model number and the laptop product number to find out how they've indexed your model, but once you get onto it, you might find better pricing that you expect.

I just had a 17m-ae011dx in this very morning, with "some keys don't work after I spilled coffee on it". Turns out that model has the keyboard and top plate as one unit, and you have to completely disassemble the thing to replace the top plate. I found one on ebay for $225, but hp had it for $145 plus shipping. I'd much rather get an OEM part new in the box than roll the dice on ebay anyway. I quoted 2 hours labor plus the part (with my completely reasonable 25% markup), plus the standard contingency for spills - "we don't know what else we'll find once we get it apart" - they accepted so it's ordered and on it's way.

Just now looked at partsurfer.hp.com (thanks), they want $93.61 before shipping charges. Hate to do fleabay, but I'll leave that up to the customer I think.

Looking at the procedure for swapping this thing out, nothing about this is going to be cheap for the customer. It's a start at the back and disassemble everything to get to it kinda thing. Not only does the MB have to come out, but the heat sink must be removed from the CPU as well.

I wont do those. Too many things I could screw up and be responsible for. I send those to someone else. Let them be responsible.

I kind of enjoy those. Good therapy. Things fit perfectly or not at all. I did a keyboard on a Yoga recently and gutted it (not much there). Pffft - Tablet motherboard screwed to the back of the keyboard and they call it a laptop.

So you (generally) ask for at least 50% down before you order any parts like this?

I just this moment had a walk-in with an HP that needed a replacement keyboard.
The laptop was so old that I just shook my head!
It was one of those old bricks that are about 2" thick!
I told him there was probably no way of getting a KB - maybe try fleabay?

He insisted that I try to obtain one and replace it for him.

So, the job is done. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, though I do prefer the easy ones.

Customer got lucky as there were water stains all through the laptop including the back of the System Board and the inside of the back itself. Family PC with both kids & adults sharing it. Fun times.

That's where it's possibly cheaper for them to just buy an entire replacement laptop, though once they're old enough identical replacements no longer show up because it's not worth it for anyone to list them.

"Next time you might want to consider a ThinkPad T series - they have drain holes designed to let water go through the keyboard and out the bottom of the laptop."

agh, me too, I won't touch anything that has to be glued back together either.
