So I need to try and recover some data that was deleted from the Trash bin on a Mac. The machine hasn't been used since.

I don't have a Mac to work with, only Windows or Linux. Can anyone recommend a piece of software to scan for such files and possibly recover that will run on Windows or Linux.

Client has already refused prof. data recovery. It's great if we can get the stuff but no biggie if we can't.

What I do with Mac repair is I have an external HDD with OSX installed on it. I boot off of that and then run any mac tools from there.

RStudio on Windows/Linux will read HFS+, make an image and run it on that.

Please make an image first...

Pretty much any data recovery tool will work. R-Studio (http://www.r-tt.com/data_recovery_macintosh/Download.shtml) and DR4 (http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php) are two popular ones.

As with any data recovery you need to boot from another drive. DR4 now has neat feature where you can use the tool to make a bootable drive. But I have never used it.

What SpaceSquad mentioned is something that all Apple techs have (hopefully). External USB drive(s) with OS X and all the tools preloaded.

I've done the trash recovery thing in the past. It's just like any other data recovery. If they did not mess around with it after the event and you got your hands on it right away chances are pretty good you will be able to get the data. IF they DID NOT do a secure empty trash. If they did its almost certainly gone. Of course hopping onto Time Machine is the easiest method as we all know how conscientious computer users are about backing up their data (LOL!!!!!)

Thanks Mike and Mark.

Imaging won't be happening - they won't pay for anything other than the most basic sweep for data. They don't have backups. I have used R-Studio for many years and never knew it could do HFS recovery! I hardly ever see Macs. I'll hook it up to my DR machine and scan with R-Studio so!

I'm not sure it is worth your time. You will likely only fine the files in RAW format, no file or folder names. If they aren't willing to pay to do it right, don't waste your time, unless they are willing to pay you for your time, even if you don't get their files recovered.
