Hmm, I replied but it must have vapourized while I went looking for some references. What it said was, the centre part is the ground plane--don't try to remove it! The outer bands are connected to each other internally, so you need to mount the 4 x 330uFd caps between the two outer rails and the ground plane, something like in this BadCaps photo: http://prntscr.com/95nvsi. I recommend the article on BadCaps about the NEC TOKIN, for details on replacement caps., etc.

I was wondering, because all resources I've found have 2 connected ground rails (as opposed to what I seem to have - a single one). Like the one you posted, for example.

Perhaps they thought better heat sinking through a large ground plane would make the cap last longer. In any case, the bottom of the NEC cap should look like the one in my penultimate post, which has the cap lying inverted, to the left of its original location. If that's the case, it really doesn't matter if they used two rails or a larger ground plane. The replacement caps would be soldered on with positive ends on the outer bands and the negative ends on the ground plane. Let us know if the replacement fixed the problem, but I'm betting 10 to 1 that it will.

Well, I've installed the new caps and it turned on fine... so I presume, so far so good.

I will do some further testing and see how it results.

EDIT: Looks like it's working fine. It couldn't even log into windows without some random fatal error before. I'm using it without any issues.
