RAM issue

Hello, before I start I don't know much about PC's so please respect the fact i'm a total tool when it comes to this.

I got myself a computer Intel Celeron CPU 2.80GHz with 512MB and want to upgrade it

I went into the system information and found this:

Maximum Capacity: 384 MBytes

Maximum Memory Module Size: 128 MBytes

I also found out it uses (PC3200) 256MB on each slot and 200MHZ speed. Now I wanted to upgrade the RAM myself and been offered (x2) 512MB at 400MHZ speed, problem is I don't understand or know if this will work once fitted into the computer.

Does anyone know by this infomation given that I could swap the 256mb's for the 512mb's? is the MHZ speed an issue? or do I need to find another alternative?

Hi, welcome to the forums! Don't worry about asking questions. You'll find some people who on here and elsewhere who might poke fun, but don't sweat it.

That being said, I had my first customer want to upgrade the RAM for his Toshiba satellite and I used http://www.pcmemorystore.com and they ask what computer brand and model you have and they will give you any RAM sales that is available for you to purchase. Be warned, I got a 2gb upgrade for my customer and one of them was defective (2 1gb sticks) because I tested the DIMMs and what-not and every time I put this certain stick in the screen would just go black when I turned it on, so I sent it back. It could have been just by chance so I don't personally think they are a bad place to buy RAM and it's easy too.

Also, try to buy your RAM from the same company. For example, if you upgrade to 2gb then get two 1gb sticks from the same company and go into your BIOS and see if it supports dual-channeling and if you're not using a server then get Non-ECC RAM.

It's a custom built pc, so what's the worst that will happen if I buy the wrong RAM? I know about it being 3200 and it's divided into two parts on the chip but what i'm worried about is getting say 2x 1gb RAM and the computer won't accept it.

Can I use as much memory as I want or is every computer restricted to what RAM they are allowed in the slots??

The best thing is find out Make and Model of the motherboard, look it up on the interntet to see what RAM takes and how much
