PSUs and surge protectors

Ok, i talked to the guy this morning as he handed over the desktop to me, it was a surge protector he plugged it into when it zapped out. I have the desktop with me, and it's not doin anything except being a glorified paper weight, i'll talk to him in the morning and see if he wants me to replace it, I'm just curious on whether or not the company that made it, will honor the 1 year warranty on it, that is on their site, as i bought it off their ebay site. time to throw an email at them and find out!

Edit: Also forgot to mention, thanks for your tips and ideas :)

Have you had a chance to check the PSU to make sure it is the only problem now, have you seen any damage to the motherboard like blown caps?

Just checked the caps as per your question, no caps look out of place or blown. I did also test the psu to another spare MB i had lying around, still no power to that so I'm going to say, it's dead.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I saw something in the news today that reminded me of the safety discussion that dominated much of this conversation:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17852_3-57528853-71/teen-electrocuted-while-working-on-unplugged-computer/

This is only about 2 hours out from where I live, so I felt compelled to share. Most people on this site have enough sense to stay out of a PSU if they don't know what they're doing when inside of one, but it is important to not understate the potential hazard to aspiring techs. Kids know everything and are invincible... until they aren't.
