Hi, I have a customer whos kids live on the net all night (duh). She has tried parental control but the kids hacked around them. Shes tried unplugging the router, ofcourse that failed. My suggestion was to move the modem to a room with a lock! Anybody know of any programs that cut internet use after a certain time? I know some hotels have this, but I don't know if there is a retail version.
Program to kick kids of the net at 9:00 daily??

Windows Live has a good parental controls system, which Im pretty sure does this

Look for config info on the router level could be under access restrictions or something similar depending on the router itself.
Basically input the MAC address of the computer being used and set usage times through the configuration. You can also do this for multiple MAC addresses so you can set time limits, rules on specific sites and more!
You could for instance create a custom web page with their names saying they are unable to access due to their online curfew! Then set that to redirect if they try to access any webpage after the specific time. That would be fun!

Thats does sound fun! too bad I don't have a clue how to do it, google is my friend!! I will ask her make/model of her router.

Have her take and lock up any device that has the ability to access the internet at 9 pm. She should be the parent and not allow this kind of behavior.
exactly, however they are all desktops, may be a bit of a pain.

Both K-9 and norton have time limits, but both can be circumvented through judicious use of autoruns. So create a non admin account for the kids and either should be fine. If that is an option.
While anything is circumventable, in a case like this they may have to make obvious changes (like remove the admin password or disable the security program) before being able to circumvent it.
However as mentioned above, if your router supports it or can take dd-wrt firmware that would be the best solution.

She needs to teach the kids the meaning of consequences and, for herself, she needs to look up the definition of "doormat". If she catches any of the kids bypassing the rules in place, one (or all) loses some sort of privilege. Period.
A good parent does not need to lock devices up in a box/room. S/he says "9pm. You're done." and the kids stop. If they don't, they face some form of discipline.

If they're keen to try actual parenting with the aid of technology, you could set up Convenant Eyes. This would give them a report of the sites and times that they were being accessed. It is spectacularly difficult to hack without leaving bear-tracks and if the little angels do manage to knock it out the report will say so. The idea here is that all the sites they visit are logged (and rated by content), you tell the kids what the rules are then you trust but verify.
Ha, I love the little bits of parental opinions getting thrown about here, I myself a grandparent and having been a bit of a "problem" child and my daughters having grown to be admirable professional adults...however they pulled the wool over my eyes on many occasions..(ie. broken bedroom window for midnight excursions). The advice is often "easier said than done" in the case of crafty teens with facebook on their minds in the middle of the night...or worse. My job is just to find a answer not to advise her on parenting, I'll leave that to her parents!

Yup, It's called a belt.
Jokes aside, most new routers now have parental controls.
Also, clarify what you mean by "hacked around". They probably just goggled a way around. Try the router time controls, give them a limited account and blacklist list words they would use to find a way around: Proxy, Parental control, hacks, etc. That will slow them down.
Just remove the router completely rather than just turning it off at the wall.
Otherwise you could use OpenDNS on the router to prove they were on late, though it wouldn't stop them. (I thought they had a time based filter but obviously not).
Depending on how "savvy" they really are, MAC filters can be easily fooled with pretty basic stuff nowadays.
