Print issues on Vista

I have a client with print issues on a Vista Business 32b desktop. I am hopeful that they will replace it soon but in the meantime, it would be nice if I could help with this issue.

They have two other computers with printers shared from them. Both are Windows 10 64b. I was able to share printing from both Windows 10 computers and HP LaserJet 1022 printers but it lasted less than a day before they started getting error messages. I tried downloading & installing a new printer driver, restarting the print spooler, as well as doing a system restore, none of which helped (the restore actually failed). I can ping the computers that have the printers attached from the Vista machine but can not "see" them when I click on the Network.

Messages include:
Access violation at address 065A534C in module 'ZIMFDRV.DLL'. Read of address 0000006c.

Test page failed to print. Would you like to view the print troubleshooter for assistance? The server print spooler service is not running.

Could not start print job.

Agreed with AIO, check off everything.

Did you remove the print drivers, physically delete the print q folders (windows/system32/spool/printers), then re-install? Did you add the 32bit driver for sharing on the W10 boxes? Had it been working before? Did you check the W10 boxes for updates and try rolling those back?

This may ruffle some feathers, but Vista is no longer supported and should not be in use. It's a security issue and like XP more and more things will stop working. It's not to anyone's benefit to try limping it along any further. Use this as an opportunity to get them on modern hardware/OS.

And every time you make something "work" it delays the need to replace it thus leaving yet another unsupported OS in the wild.

You can get refurbs to replace it for a reasonable cost.

I've sold quite a few Optiplex 390s and 3010s SFFs in the past. About the only failure I've had was a power supply. I thought the power supplies were going to be outrageously priced like other odd sized power supplies but they are readily available at typical PS prices. I've had quite a few repeat requests for SFFs.

SFFs are the majority that we sell except for the once in a while gaming build. At one time about 6 months ago we had a great source for Dell SFF 3020s, etc for $20 a piece (we would buy 20-30 at a time) but that source dried up because hospitals and government aren't replacing every two years like they were before. We were able to get Dell Latitudes E6420, etc for $30 each too.

I believe Beth came asking for our help and I'm not really seeing many answers - other than try to get the customer to move to something newer (OS and computer.) But that's not going to help with this particular problem.

Seems that so many of you have forgotten how to "help" and just take the short road to upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. I don't understand why this is, actually. Unless you don't have the experience with issues such as hers!

I'll get down off of my soap box now.

Beth, is the printer a plain 1022 or is it 1022n or 1022nw? If it is either of the latter, consider adding to the network and set it up as a network printer. That way everyone should be able to use it.

I did a quick lookup on the HP web site and it doesn't show any support the 1022 with anything above Vista - both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Hopefully something here may be able to help with your problem.

Actually, those of us that suggested moving to supported software were trying to help. I've seen very similar questions posted here where the tech knew they should try to get them to upgrade and just needed a gentle push from the group to make that move. In my opinion that is the best option, because it likely means a new or newer machine with a supported O/S. That would provide a more stable system and likely a much improved performance experience. There are many different ways to do many things in this field, but saying we aren't being helpful isn't true. Trying to band aid outdated hardware\software isn't really helping in my opinion because you are giving false hope to the client that they can run outdated solutions forever.

The only reason I commented my above answer was for her to at the very least, get it going so that the client would appreciate her hard work. Doing so will help her to transition the client to something newer AND away from Vista. Even if this is just a short-term fix.

But no, I'm the bad guy here for doing my best to "help her to help the client?" :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Problem most clients will never move until total hardware failure. The tech will be called for every little problem and expect it to be able to be fixed every time because "you fixed it last time". I have found those clients don't like to or won't want pay for all these fixes and some will even blame you for the problems.

I find it the duty of a responsible tech not to support unsupported OS's except in extreme cases. This case is not one of them.;)
