Besides installing Unchecky, Ad Block Plus, setting DNS to open DNS.

What else can I do? What do you do?

This guy has already installed what I took off a week ago. Along with removing AVAST and getting a McAfee trial. It's almost like it stepped back in time. But I see no evidence of system restore being used or it being refreshed.

Windows 8.1 BTW

There are downloads for some of what is on there in the downloads folder.

I just feel like he is going to keep doing this.

I think you can use this to lock the system, but on a user's pc, might check with him and see if he's interested in that.

I would put Avast back on, set it to scan for PUPs also. Tell him that you recommend Avast and not Mcafee if that's the way you feel.

With Avast, I set it to scan for PUPs, I also get them using Chrome or Firefox and adblock plus with all 3 settings turned on. Have not used unchecky. You might mention Malwarebytes Premium. Also, try to educate them to ask them what they are doing with their pc, and let them know why their computer is getting the way it is and how to help slow down things. Maybe too just let them know I'm helping you this time for free/reduced rate and show them how to keep their system clean, but then charge the next time around. Sometimes a bill makes people think differently.

It gets to the point where you can only do so much. You can't make any system foolproof.

Explain clearly what you've done, why you've done it, and what can happen if he makes changes to what you've done.

if he continues, just keep cleaning it and sending the bill. Or fire him.

You can't protect people from themselves.

I do'ntt get it. Why is it your problem / fault.?
If they won't take advice I have no problem taking their money .

Try selling him on MalwareBytes Pro that should help.

I was using Unchecky but I've read about some people having issues with it, messing with the Hosts file and causing havoc. I stop using it. I also add CryptoPrevent and Cryptoguard.

Maybe introduce them to Ninite.com, and explain that if they ever need something installing to check there first.

I also find making them aware of the Ninite download location and to run it once a week will stop them from wandering off on their own trying to update their apps and ultimately getting them from poor sources.

If Ninite doesn't have it, then I recommend them to go to FileHippo.com.

I also distinguish between a Virus and a PUP and make them aware that nothing is foolproof and that Anti Virus will let you down at some point, so always be vigilant.

If they fail in the basics, then there isn't much else you can do.

If he continues being this bad, there's software out there that basically saves your Windows state and restores it every time you restart. I can't remember them name of them but I've seen them referred to on here before. I think it's basically a virtual machine that prevents them from making any lasting changes to their pc lol

interesting point. i don't recall the crash repairer trying to install a speed limiter or alcohol tester or trying to teach me how to drive my car or tell me to get my eyes tested. they just laugh and take my money and walk away.

Yup, sourceforge is doing this too, not sure if its domain wide or just some select downloads, but it caught me off guard a while ago.. Nasty because they are installing PC OPTIMIZER PRO when you download some files.

I forget what site it was, but it was one that caught me off guard too, and I ended up getting conduit on my personal laptop. I felt great shame, and am still getting mocked at work :(

Nothing really but tell them to not use their PC.

Clients can have the best AV software available and still FUBAR their systems [and maybe blame you for recommending it].

Java and ask.com installs, why do they do this? Java is supposed to secure browser, though they addon this ask.com for browsers. I know not really malware but AnnoyingWare that changes search engines.
.

Thank them for checkboxes lol.

May want to check out that link I posted. That should help out with that same issue. Thought it was a great tip when I ran into the article.

I have been testing out unchecky on several of my special customers and I got 4 back within 6 months loaded up again. Unchecky will tell you how many boxes it has unchecked since installation.

Sadly it unchecked nothing on 3 of them and only 1 unchecked one box on the other, so it clearly failed that experiment and I no longer use it.
