guys i need to know if anyone has ever used or come across this AV proggie,
http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/
only i have had a couple of customers in the past few days installing it, i have always used AVG but since version 8 IMO is a piece of crap i am looking at the alternatives.

any input and suggestions much appreciated but any ideas must be able to run on older hardware as a lot of my patients sorry clients are still on old machines.

I started using avast HE for Home Users that are not willing to pay extra for AV Software. I noticed that it does a scan when you reboot the PC, I only noticed this happening the first time after installing, after rebooting again it didn't do a "boot scan".

i have to say that i liked Avast but i have a problem in putting it on clients pc's as i have found that when it comes to renewing the registration a lot of them just dont get that it is still free and so they do not do it,however i found that avg free even though i think it is bloated and slow is still the prefered choice when it comes to customers machines.

Kaspersky

Kaspersky seems to be the best antivirus program out there as far as i have seen.. You can get 1 year key for 1 computer for as low as $4.00 to $7.00 on ebay instead of 59.95 they want on there website.. Try there trail version and see what you think.. I have been using it now for about 3 or 4 years myself..

good free av app

Pc tools is a good company, Ive used spyware doctor starter for years with no issues. I've used the av app a few times with stubborn viruses. Its got a nice interface for the non-techie. I think avg is the best free av app for the basic user, easy to use. Id also reccommend avira a/v as well, also free. I like avast, but the interface is hard on a novice user.

I sell them AVG because the updates are much quicker downloads than on the free version. Plus I am in the business to make a living, and I can't make a living giving away free software.

So you some of you actually sell free software to customers? Is that legal? I don't really know if it is or not, just asking.

I ended up choosing Cyberdefender

Over the last couple of month I had a bad string of getting all kinds of viruses, and having to scramble to fix them.

I ended up trying AVG, PC Tools, Combofix, SuperAntiSpyware and Cyberdefender

All the free versions. Each one worked to different levels depending on the virus and situation. I will say this, some of the newer viruses that I got, AVG and PC Tools was not able to deal with them that well.

Combofix is more an advanced tool for specific viruses. I liked PC Tools user interface, but it was not able to deal with the adware.virtumonde (very nasty). SuperAntiSpyware got rid of it, but left Windows XP in a damaged state, so in the end, I re-imaged it.

I had installed Cyberdefender on the new image, cuz a friend of mine said they had just released a vitumonde update, and to test it, I visied the site that gave me the original virus, got it again, but Cyberdefender cleaned it up without wounding Windows.

In the end I decided to keep Cyberdefender, and since they are a NASDAQ company (most of the above product are from private companies so they have no accountability) decided to pay for the upgrade since it comes with 24/7 tech help and thought it would be good for the wife if I am traveling and something happens to the computer.

Cyberdefender 2 thumbs up!!

CyberDefender Anti-Virus Software

I installed Cyberdefender a couple of months ago, and really like it. The free version had some annoying pop-ups, so I decided to pay the $24 for the upgraded version, and have been very happy with it. I have not had any problems/viruses since I installed it, but it did clear a few malware that tried to infect my system.

Hope this helps.

I never recommend free Antivirus to my customers anymore. I used to recommend AVG but since version 8 it kills a system just as much as McAfee or Norton security suits do. Though I have heared good things about Norton 2009. I use and recommend NOD32 since it's so lightwieght and works extremely well. I frankly don't think AVG is all that good anymore. The antispyware portion of it is particularly poor.
