Outlook 2010 VS Thunderbird 3.1.7

Greetings,

I need some opinions as to which mail client I should get used to using. I have been using a little of each for some reason. I like the calendar and other options in Outlook as well as learning outlook helps me trouble shoot business clients problems (as most use outlook).

Here is the thing. I have about 15-40 email addresses that I check regularly, each has it's own specific task/responsibility so it is best to not forward all of them to one box and do things that way. Is there a limit in either Outlook or Thunderbird as to how many accounts I can have? Do the add-ons in Thunderbird make it a better solution? Are there add-on's for Outlook?

BTW, I am starting 2 businesses, one is my IT biz and another is a sales business so I don't know if that makes any difference at all.

Thanks for any suggestions or input!

My setup is Thunderbird with two tabs open for my Google Apps Calendar and Contacts. I use an addon that syncs with my address book but I prefer to add them online so it shows up immediately on my phone/ipad, same with the calendar.

I was looking at a neat program called Chandler a while back that had some neat features but it's progress was so slow that I couldn't see it being compatible so I gave up on it.

Thanks for the ideas. I think the interaction with Google Apps and the like is really what makes Thunderbird stand out.

I get the other tabs using the "Custom Buttons" addon using the code:

Components.classes['@mozilla.org/appshell/window-mediator;1'].getService(Components.interfaces.nsIWindowMediator).getMostRecentWindow("mail:3pane").document.getElementById("tabmail").openTab("contentTab", {contentPage: "http://_____"});

Once running, they're static and come back when TB restarts.

What addon are you using to sync them? I've done some looking and haven't found one that does it correctly 100% of the time. The only place that I can get the address entered in the appropriate field properly is on my Android.

My pick for that task would be Postbox. Its based on Thunderbird, but is a commercial email client. I was a long-time TB user (I have multiple accounts - not as many as you though!) and this is what I use these days. It has an improved interface and some organisational tools built in that are very handy. It also has a range of add-ons available. There's a lite version available for download, but my recommentation would be the full version, which is a very nice piece of software. Cost is about $30.USD

As far as how many accounts you can have in Thunderbird, I don't think there's a limit. The most that I helped someone with over at Mozillazine was coming up on 90 accounts. Could I manage that many in my own usage? Absolutely not! ;-)

like eHousecalls, I use TB and Google Calendar/Contacts and am about to try Google Tasks

the Calendar & Contacts nearly instantly sync up with my phone which is very useful

gContactSync

I've got it set to sync every 10 mins but only one way. I used an addon that wiped my address book once so now I'm paranoid. I'd rather just do the Contacts in the web tab and let the addon pull it in that way.

That's the one I've found to work the best, but not 100%, more like 60%. It's really annoying that Google provides the individual fields for street address, city, zip, etc., but then doesn't provide an easy way to populate them. If I enter an address in Google directly on the web, it will show up on my Android phone all in the street address field, with the others blank. In my search for a Thunderbird/Google address sync addon, I found many discussions on how limited their API is in this regards.
I had my addressbook wiped a few times as well. I did have the foresight to back it up prior to messing with the addons;)

Outlook 2010 creates a seperate pst file for each email account. I use 2 email accounts for my personal stuff and like it all in one inbox and had a heck of a time finding a way to get outlook 2010 to leave it that way. I dont use gmail calendar at all but my boss uses it with is android phone and has his outlook enchange with calendar & everything sync with his gmail account.

I use Outlook 2007 and have 6 e-mail accounts from 4 sources. It works fine for me.

I have not looked at Thunderbird in more than 4 years. When I tried it before, I encountered some file corruption issues that could not be resolved. Outlook has SCANPST which has always worked for me.
