I want some of your opinions.

We used to recommend AVG free for all our residential clients, we have switched out of that because a couple reasons:
1. It has gotten really bloated and slows down the computer.
2. I am tired of getting phone calls, " AVG keeps popping up and asking me to
upgrade"
3. I have done research online, at several lab tests and studies and AVG is
not on the top anymore for free security.

So, we have switched to recommending Microsoft Security Essentials, and for a complete security solution installing MalwareBytes Pro. along with it.
A couple reasons for this.
1. MSE is far less bloated and from what studies and lab tests online have
shown, is that it catches more than AVG on the Virus, Trojan, Worm
side, but lacks on the Spyware/Adware side, but thats where
MalwareBytes Pro. comes in.
2. MSE updates with Windows
3. MSE doesn't keep popping up wanting to upgrade(updates are different)
4. We are now making profit on selling Malwarebytes Pro were before we
were not.

What do you think? I know some of you already do the MSE/MalwareBytes Pro deal, how does it work for you?

Thanks!

We use Malwarebytes and either MSE or Ad-Aware as far as free goes. Paid we use Malwarebytes and Kapersky. I've been looking for the 'virus software showdown' link where Ad-Aware had the best detection and removal over Norton, MSE, Malwarebytes, and some other well knowns. It was a recent test too if I find the link I'll post it. Anyhow AA works very well, even gets some rootkits, I stress some :). We found it real comprehensive at identifing and removing. I haven't noticed any impact on the systems I've installed it on. We tested it out for a couple of months before letting machines leave the shop with it, and it's been recieved well. I'll be testing/checking out the new MSE as soon as I can, I'm curious too see how it does.

I stopped using AVG for my "freebie" jobs back when version 7 came out. It can't catch a herpe in a Tijuana wXXXXhouse. Not to mention the bogging down bloat it started having, poor removal/cleaning rates, the toolbar that makes the browser crawl like it's on a 9600 baud modem, the annoying prompts to upgrade to the paid version..... Yeah, since version 7...pretty much no good reason to use it.

Had flipped flopped between Avast and AntiVir for a while...at least they were effective in catching stuff and cleaning the computer. Avast bogged them down a bit...so I'd only use that on stronger computers, and use AntiVir on the older lighter computers. But both still had the annoying prompts to upgrade to the pro version.

Was happy when MSE came out...I have used it since it first came out..like..the very first week it came out. Slowly started using it more and more for free jobs...noticed it seemed to work well. No complaints from end users, and fewer "returns". That trend continues as I started using it widespread for the "friends/family/neighbors/other home user" jobs I do.

And even for small businesses (it is licensed for use on desktop operating system in a business of up to 10 computers) that are small/cheap and I dont want to bother with yearly license renewals, I'll use MSE. I don't know of any other free AV that is legal to use in a business..and I see (and point and laugh at) many that use AVG.

Have to say I'm very happy with it and its performance.
It's not "the best" of the freebies as far as detection goes...Avast and AntiVir get better detection rates. But MSE is still quite strong, it is consistent, it does not nag at all, very simple interface, and doesn't bog down the systems much.
