Can anyone tell me what's responsible for the multiple orange arrows across some of the icons in this pic??

Any input appreciated.

Windows 10 machine, blue screening, client wants it fixed yesterday..

If you move the icons to another part of the desktop do the arrows move as well?
Are the arrows themselves movable?
If you hide the desktop icons are the arrows still visible?
If you remove the background image are they still visible?
They haven't used a screenshot of another desktop as a background image?

Have you run a malware scan?
System restore?
Otherwise it looks like the remnants of a program not uninstalled correctly.

I've just been sent that image, the arrows were not present on the desktop until the customer booted the pc an hour ago... It's also showing bsod system screens and apparently system restore is not turned on... This should be fun..[emoji5]

Well, the first thing I would do would be to check the Add/Remove Programs list for anything that was installed very recently. just check the "Installed On" column.
LastActivityView could help here as well. Might show what they've done.

Second, I would run a full malware scan with something like Emsisoft Emergency Kit if it boots into windows, or Bitdfender Rescue CD run from a bootable USB if it doesn't.
Use Bitdefender's Stickifier to download and create the bootable USB. Makes it simple.

Also run Task Manager and Autoruns to see if there is anything "weird" running that looks out of the ordinary.

You can do an online search for anything strange (right-click item --> Online Search) from inside Autoruns.

All valid suggestions above. But because the orange crosses are different on each icon, I'd suspect that somebody's playing a trick on the user. Such as turning off the desktop icon display and then changing the background image to the picture you're seeing. Should be able to tell after only 30 seconds on the PC by changing the background image to something else (e.g. a solid color).

I did suggest the background image may have been played with in my first response..

Turns out it's corrupting system files anyway, but thankyou for your input, gents.
