This is a strange one and I am lost now.

A client says one day excel and power point stop opening up when the file is clicked on but work is fine.

When I look at it the icons and the generic blank ones the windows uses when it foes not know what to use. on his desktop he has all the short cuts to the virtualization handler CVH.exe and they all open fine and I can open the files fine when in the program but not from the files themselves.

The computer has 1 hard drive C drive has everything on it with a recovery partition on D. There is a Q drive which is showing a local but is inaccessible and the disk management does not even see the q drive at all.

When in excel and the other programs it has a lot of add-ons that are apparently on the q drive. Also when I right click on an excel file it shows as being an excel file but I cannot get it to open.

I have googled and tried their suggestions and while some say to look in office14 folder, there are no exe files for the programs as some suggest.

The default programs does not have office listed at all, and there are no links in the start bar => all programs for any office program.

The program & features has office home & business listed but it's only 14MB and I tried the repair option with no luck. but it also has office click to run 2010.

so before I try to reinstall office is there anything else you can think of for me to try?

Thanks

If I'm understanding your description correctly...it sounds like the Windows file association no longer recognizes Office docs. Makes me think of situations where a system restore occurred to a point prior to some software being installed, like a manual HIVE restoration back to a certain point.

I would say a proper uninstall and reinstall of Office and all updates would be fine. But I'd be curious to further investigate the system to see why this happened...and if other software was impacted.

Other programs seem fine Music, pictures and pdfs all work as they are meant to. the problem is associated with office. I am still digging in to it.

Edit, it seams like a lot of updates have been installed over the past week including SP2. Might try a roll back just to see.

just an update. I restored the laptop back a couple of weeks pre SP2 but did not fix it. It now managed to open excel but the spreadsheet was greyed out.

I downloaded office and got his COA over the phone. When installing it, it did not even recognise any previous install and went ahead as if it was a fresh install but its working as normal again.

thanks
Steven

well after picking his laptop up he tipped me 6 bottles of beer because the last time he had a problem like this PC world took a week to fix and £200.

Responding when called and being prompt with service is a sure way to keep going in this business.

I may get the account where my wife works because another local tech that services her office has a problem returning calls or showing up as promised.

if you cant get back to people there are a ton of people that will. Warranty work done and quick makes you stand out from the rest.

glad you worked it out. thanks for the update.

What you were dealing with was a "Click-To-Run" install of Office. The fix, without reinstalling, would have been to go to Control panel and manage click to run apps, and repair office.

I have had this issue a few tiems before with downloading office trial click to run or whatever its called with publisher files. As far as I remember I did all the uninstall, reinstall, checked for updates could not get it to work until I did a full uninstall and installed from a cd. after than no issues.
