No Power to the MotherBoard

Hello everyone,

This is the computer:
AMD64 X2 4800+ AM2
Gigabyte GA-M61pME-S2
OCZ (Vista Upgrade Edition) DDR2 800MHZ PC2-6400 (2x1 GB)
ZoTac 8400GS
LG GH20NS
COMPUCASE 6A21
ThermalTake TR2 430W


This PC was bought and build for a customer of mine on June 2008.
It worked perfectly until now when it started to random crashes etc.. I assumed it was the mass dusted case (which I've cleaned) but the client brought me the PC again this time it wasn't started at all.

I've checked the Power Supply with PS Tester and it was OK, then I've checked everything is hooked in place.
Next I've connected everything and used a SOYO TechAid Debug PCI card to check if there is some problem with the board or perhaps it is the Power Switch went bad.
The Card showed that there is no power on the motherboard (it has several light bulbs for each Voltage that should be in the PC, non turned on).

So in the end I assumed it was a bad motherboard and sent it to my supplier, BUT after he checked it I was told the motherboard is OK.

what could the problem be?

In this case I would try to motherboard with different components, just put it in another system and check if it works, or take out every component possible. If it works, obviously it's a good mobo.

I would also check the power supply on another system, although you've tested it. But who knows?

By any chance, have you check for any contacts with the case itself, which causes the motherboard to short and not work. Never had the opportunity to tackle this problem myself, but I've heard similar stories especially with newly build systems though.

This is what comes to mind at the moment.
 
I would also try a new PSU. Maybe the other one is putting out power that is just slightly lower than what the MoBo accepts.
 
I agree with TimeCode. Just had a Dell in that would not turn on. I tested the power supply and it showed good, but when it was hooked up to the pc it couldn't take the load.
 
You can get simple load testers which you put on the main board connector from the supply then you can test the other output voltages on the other connectors with the typical lcd testers or a multimeter. Putting a load on it gives you a better idea of what's going on. If you're really sophisticated you can put the load tester on it and then stick your oscilloscope on the other outputs and check regulation.

that tech of my supplier called me and said the board is OK and that he checked it!

Today I went there and on his form he wrote that he used for the test an E8400, how in gods name you can use an LGA775 Intel chip on an AMD AM2 board?

I've guessed that he was confused between AMD4800 to the E8400 so I took the board and guess what.... still dead.

tested it with 2 different power supplies and re assembled the entire box for this test.

so I think it is now safe to say that the board is dead.

silly me...

looked all over instead of just looking on the case for damgaes.

I've unhooked all parts in the interior just left the procesor + ram and it's alive!

I started hooking up all of the parts and it crashed when I've connected the front panel USB cable, I think the somone was bit to tough on the USB connection look at this photo:

That USB port looks used and abused! Glad you found the problem. I had to do similar troubleshooting yesterday. It feels good when you finally find the root cause of the issue on a problem like this!
