[Solved] No power to motherboard?

Hi, Everyone

I have a Hp pavilion a1020n on the bench. Windows xp, Intel P4.
Plug the power cord in the power supply and the motherboard will not boot up.
I have swapped 2 power supplies and still will not boot? Also swapped the cmos battery and ram.

My conclusion would be the motherboard.

Any ideas?

Thanks

It was the motherboard that was bad.

I had the exact same model not that long ago with a bad motherboard. Have you tried looking at the power switch?

I have looked at the switch already. I don't have another switch to try it out on so I tried to jump(Can't think of the name of it right now.) the pin out and still nothing.

Trying to get this boot up so I can use PC-Doctor Offline DOS Diagnostics software from hp.com.

Thanks

"short" you mean? If the switch is faulty, shorting the leads will power the system on, so if it didn't then it's very unlikely that it's the switch. Probably the motherboard, as you said.

Maybe you should just get those mini speaker, reset & power switch, LEDs kit from ebay. They are really handy.

Like these:

Been wanting those, but my search-fu seems to be lacking. Can you suggest a search string that will reveal those little gems for sale?

That was what I was trying to remeber "short it out".

That was what I was looking for couple of weeks back but was unable to find these switches. I will have to try and find these.Maybe Newegg.

Thanks

Since you've already tested the power supply with "known good" one and you concluded with the similar results. I would ohm out the switch, like your doing, make sure you check for continuity. If you find that isn't the issue swap the motherboard. Don't over-think it, just order and change the MB then move on to the next job. It's about 30-45 min. job maybe a bit longer if your never done it.

Your on the right track, now go make some money! :)

I don't have a motherboard to swap it out with other wise I would have down that instead of.
Where do you look for newish motherboards besides ebay? I have a hard time wanting to sell refurbished stuff. Because I don't want the customers to come back upset and lose the customoers over it either.
Might sell them a new machine with windows 7 since windows xp will not be supported.

Great ebay doesn't have it.

Thanks

Is the unit a generic computer or name brand? If it's generic honestly, you can get a similar make from Newegg.com or PCOutlet.com, we have a company called Fry's Electronics (frys.com) that I've purchased MB from as well. If it's a brand name (HP, Dell etc.) I just get the model number and get a new one directly from them.

I've been successful with Ebay but really it's your reputation on the line, not to say that even with brand new units it wont go bad but I really don't like to leave it to chance. You do have a warranty, But Ultimately it's Your Call.

Good luck and please let everyone know how it turns out.

To your success!! :)

Its a big name brand. I wish it was a generic built one would be easier.
Hp doesn't sell this motherboard it says to contact seller:(. Unless you know of way to get hp or big name brand to sell thier motherboard/anything else?

Well idea here it is a LGA775 chip set.
Will something like this work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130305 or this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131794#top And then swap out chip?

Looks more like selling them a new pc with windows 7.

If you are considering replacing the motherboard with amother brand, my only advice would be to ensure the original mobo used ATX or mATX standards in terms of dimensions and mounting holes. Some manufacturers, like Dell, use proprietary components which means parts other than theirs will not fit/mount in their machines. Additionally, if you are able to replace the motherboard, you will probably need to contact Microsoft in order for their original version of Windows to work, since the software license is generally tied to the original mobo. They will usually allow you to transfer it in cases where the mobo had to be changed due to failure. Just my 2 cents worth!

Yes, manufacturers do retire boards more often than not. In all honesty, there both upgrades especially the ASUS. Either ones a good choice but do get the warranty. Pay close attention to what Richard says as I've run into this with Dell in the past. Never had to call Microsoft, but that's a good idea to stay compliant.

Thank you all,

But just waiting for client to call back I will probably sell them new system. Don't want to put in used motherboard and a week later the power supply, optical drives or last the motherboard goes.Pop one thing in and the second one goes. Of course these things seem to go in pairs.

Boy this is more of hassle trying to find an out dated p4 motherboard from big name brands and hoping that it will work when you receive the product.

But if I had to repair it this model is the closest looking lay out to it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131794#top . Its only missing three things on it. Firewire, digiital audio and one more pci slot. Or this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Grouper-...058723289?pt=Motherboards&hash=item3cc84ffdd9 . Here is the info for someone that does come across this. Hp pavilion a1020n

Wish they made a multi layered motherboard frame to fit big name brand layouts for the standard motherboards. Metal frame fits case then mobos fits the frame. Wait thats what plexi glass is for.

Also, found a useful link for finding out if this is supported or not and if you can buy it or not by searching the model numbers of anything hp product related.
