No mice will work after virus infection

We have an XP machine in that was infected with viruses. We have got it back to a funtional state, except no mice will work. We have tried both PS/2 and USB mice, both get detected but always get a code 19 and yellow exclamation mark, in safe and normal modes.

I suspect the virus has interfered with the registry, but I'm having no luck finding a fix. I have tried SFC, but this makes no difference.

The keyboard works fine, and we can move the mouse cursor using the keyboard.

Any ideas?

Did you try modifying/removing/reinstalling the HID mouse drivers in the device manager?

Check the mouse settings in the control panel and uninstall/reinstall the mouse in device manager.

Thanks, but I have tried all those suggestions and none have any effect. This does not seem like a typical driver issue.

I think I will try my luck with a repair install.

Try this... I had some bad luck with mice a while ago and discovered that it was a registry issue. I just exported the entry for you.

I was just about to try the reg entry, when I discovered that uninstalling Kaspersky 2010 solved the problem!

Hope this post helps anyone else unfortunate enough to waste the best part of a day on this problem.
