No internet until after ping

Working on a PC with a slight but annoying problem. When the ethernet cable is unplugged and replugged, the machine picks up the ip from DHCP from the router just fine but cannot connect to the internet until you ping an external address e.g. ping 8.8.8.8, at which point Windows 7 recognises the network and all is fine. All the other PCs connected to the same router are fine.

Can ping an external ip address not ping by name www.google.com ? Id say flush the borked dns cache or check misset DNS settings for the network card, but you probably checked all of that already. So no help then:( Mondays:eek:

I will quickly try a wireles card on the machine just to find out if the problem is in fact the NIC or Windows problem. If a WIFI card works just fine, then it might be a faulty NIC or wrong settings, also check the speed settings for the LAN, 1000/100 full duplex/half duplex etc.

I cleared the DNS cache but that didn't seem to work. I cleared the arp cache too.

It seems to have stopped now so maybe it's fixed - I had to leave so I won't find out unless the customer calls back.

All good ideas but as I said - it was working after the arp clear and I left it working so I can't try anything unless it happens again and they bother calling about it.
