New hard drive not recognized

Why would a new hard drive NOT been seen by the BIOS but it is seen by Dell's pre-installed service program? I verified that the new hard drive works on a test computer. But when I install it into the customer's computer, the BIOS does not see it. What is confusing is that Dell's program sees it but the BIOS does not.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Thanks!

Can't say I have. Are there any bios updates available? Have you tried a different hard drive out of a test machine to see if it just does not like that drive?

Does the machine maybe have a uefi bios with a secureboot function that needs turned off?

Is it windows 8? Laptop? As NYJimbo stated need more specifics on system.

Try this if it is what I think you mean

With new HDD installed into [x]

Disable "Secure Boot" under system config within BIOS
Then disable UEFI and enable Legacy Mode

Save changes and exit, now should recognize HDD within BIOS

Why are you replacing the drive? Perhaps the computer is broken and not the drive or both?

Maybe whatever killed the first drive is having the same issues with the new one.

Could well be a secure boot issue, I had exactly the same problem getting a DVD drive to work recently. I had to enable legacy SATA or something like that hidden deep in the BIOS settings.
