New Computer, $1000 budget

The cheapest hardware raid I found on newegg was $150

But that is not the point.

Personally I feel the more complexity you add the more likely something will fail. Some customers want state of the art and don't care that they are raising the chances of failure, others want solid less likely to fail setups.

Wow!

Software Raid cards are cheap, but what's the point? They're the same as the onboard chips or worse in most cases. Personally, if it's a high end desktop like he's going for or a TRUE workstation, I would recommend a software raid 1 or an external hdd with Acronis. For serious workstations or servers, I love the Dell Perc 5/i or HP's card (can't remember what it's called). There are also some good PCI Express and PCI X cards out there from Adaptec and areca.

In this situation, I would recommend a good external hdd and Acronis true image home.
