New App

Unlimited options what you can do with the "an" app....For now I have what I want but in the future might tweak it a bit...

Sometimes as technicians we have a hard time seeing what's going to be useful or “impressive” to average Joes. I'm getting one. Personally, I would NEVER use one myself. No way. In fact, I HATE when developers use apps instead of developing websites that can function like apps. Oh well. I'm 100% positive some of my prospects and customers will find this impressive. I'll look like I'm on top of technology. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if somebody asks me to make them on. I'll find a developer to do it and manage the project. None of my techno friends will be impressed. Again, oh well. I wouldn't have paid very much for this, but Dan got the price down WAY low.

I actually did not find this thread to be nasty at all. I think it actually turned into a really good debate. As others have said I was in no way trying to put down Daniels work, as in my eyes he is a true entrepreneur and I respect him for that.

Never said I care if someone post their opinions or not. I said "Well truthfully/honestly I really don't care if you or anyone else thinks it's a good idea" and that was based on someone saying "Honestly, I don't care about the app that much"..
It sounds like that was said in the context of not bothering the poster. I must have read more into what you were saying about not caring.

I've said before the app can be used to check status of repairs, view invoices or whatever one wants. I have it setup the way I want.
Sorry, I must have missed the post where you indicated that. Is that In the application now, a future addition, or part of your mobile website?
Wow, I can't believe the nastiness in this thread
I'm not sure where you are seeing this thread as "nasty." I think this thread was cleaned up a bit, so I may be mistaken, but I recall people calmly questioning the effectiveness of the app.

it's all in how you present it and if you believe in it yourself.

Presentation is everything, no matter what you are selling, from asking that girl out on a date, to asking for a raise!
How soon we forget, a potential client's perception is reality. If they perceive that there is value to the app, by the way it is presented, then by golly they will have to have it. Since it is free to them what do they have to lose? Simple as that. Perhaps it will work for some of you and perhaps it won't. If you don't believe in it, then it won't. Only because you will not present it or present it properly, so don't waste your time. Most items that are available are either not presented or not presented properly, or not presented at all so they are perceived as "duds" or "slow movers". Present 100% of the product 100% of the time and let them decide if they want it or not. Don't spend their money for them.

I spent a great many years as a salesman, and it took me a while to realize and accept the following:SWSWSWN

Some Will
Some Won't
So What
NEXT!

Good Night

As others have mentioned already, I see this primarily as a marketing tool. A relatively cheap marketing tool at that (I believe it's $50 to get an app developed for you, IIRC). It certainly isn't for everyone, but what marketing tool gets everyone? If it gets even one person to think about your business again, they show it to one other person, or it generates even one job, then this marketing tool has paid for itself. That's not a bad way to go.

To make it even better, more functionality would, of course, help. I haven't looked at the app at all, so some of these might already be in there, but here are some brainstorming ideas off the top of my head (some of which have already been mentioned):

- ability to schedule an appointment within the app
- exclusive app deals/discounts/coupons
- push notification
- job status querry
- view a newsletter/blog (without needing email reminders, etc)
- tips for users
- ability for customers to pay for services within the app
- view work history, details/information

I agree that anything that you could put in the app could probably be accomplished with a mobile site, but people still love their apps. Believe it or not, there are some people who will download an app just because it's an app. Why not give them something with your business name/logo attached to it?

If you wanted to get really sneaky, you could even charge for the app (say that it's because of all of the exclusive deals that you offer through the app), but give a free code to someone with every service. "Thank you for chosing us. We have a new app for iOS/Android devices. The app has tons of features including exclusive discounts and coupons and normally costs $1.99. As a token of our appreciation for choosing us, here is a code so that you can download our new app for free."

People love deals. Even if you never make a penny off of anyone actually paying for the app, they might appreciate it even more if they think they were "fortunate enough" to get it for free.

Just some thoughts.

or free if you use gogle app inventor which so easy to use even high schools have trialed it :D and for something as basic as few links or send email or a form probs take no more that 10-20 mins of time.

I've looked at it and talked to others about it and I think it's just like every other DIY thing out there and they never live up to the hype. As far as high schools doing a trial and the ease of it...well I did go to high school and in my trying it out I thought I needed a bit of college. ;)

FAQ's

Currently there are technical limitations preventing an App Inventor app from being uploaded to the Android Market, but we are actively working to resolve this

i must admit i never noticed that in the Faqs but still stand by its simplicity :p

I like this.
It's a great idea and something that will be great for customers.
I think most technibblers are considering this as advertising, just like a website, which i understand won't work as well as a website.
But i look at it as keeping in touch with the customers u already have. Add your newsletters into rather than just getting them emailed. Same with your blogs. Advertise your specials and announcements. Let customers know where in the queue their pc is.
It needs a bit of work and regular updates, but i think it is a great idea!

@cmonova,
it looks good, but it depends of what it does.
By the buttons I can see is not doing anything "special".
I hope you didn't pay through your nose for that.
Did you at least get all the rights for the app on your name?

I hope you didn't pay through your nose for that.

Not sure if maybe at one point or another I came across as a person that just throws money away for the fun of it. ;)

Alot of people seems to be concerned on what I would pay. I am actually very good with money and spend what I "feel" something is worth. As far as this app the price is a joke compared to what an app actually sells for.

If someone is going to make me the money I spend for something then I am going to do it. If a billboard cost me 5K and I can make $5,001 then I won't do it...too much effort. But, if something is going to bring me "alot" more in then it cost then i'll do it every day of the week.

Why the defensive note?
It's your App, your dough, and all that.
Anyway, if you have second thoughts, you should't worry (if you have the copyright and the source code that is).
It's a start, and you can improve it then sell it. (sell copies of it and make sh*t loads of money :))

There was no defensive note.... hence the "wink"
No second thoughts, or anything to worry about.
It is and will be a "free" app for my customers not going to make a penny of the actual "app" itself. Money will be made from the customers.

Updated with Google Map integration and PC Repair Tracker "Check Status of Repair"

I think its a great idea and hope it goes well for you.

Myself and a friend have been working on a similar idea for a couple of months now aimed at different industries such as food, retail, entertainment etc.

When it comes to mobile apps there is lots of scope for attracting customers simple ideas can make the app viral meaning more customers just look at what subway did with their app.

Good luck
