Have a client who has some legacy WinXP systems that they have to continue running for some time.

I'm looking for some backup / imaging software with bare metal restore capability, that's 100% compatible with Windows XP.

What's my best bet; storagecraft, Axcient; what?

Thank you!

Just throwing this out there - Import them into VM on a linux install. Backing up would be just exporting it as a appliance to tape or whatever they use to backup.

Just a thought.

I was going to suggest VirtualBox.. Easy to work with, portable, etc.

Windows Home Server 2011

Each PC will backup every night to the server. Server maintains daily, weekly and monthly snapshots. Restore a single file or entire computer to any of those snapshots. The server itself can be backed up to external drives and carried offsite. You'll have on drive that has images for the server and all the systems that's as current as the night before.

Windows Server 2011 Essentials, 2012, 2012 R2 all have the same features. Don't know if the later ones support XP or not. I know that Windows Server 2011 Essentials does.

I just P2V the drive into a vhd. Make a new VM in virtualbox then boot into Paragon and run the P2P adjust OS wizard (2011 version). Sometimes run the boot corrector. Pretty much works every time. I've had a couple that didn't work but they were damaged systems.

Can you be more specific about which Paragon programs you use? Is the P2P wizard part of the main program or something separate?

I've used Macrium Reflect for a long time and it has what looks like a similar feature called ReDeploy that works very well. But I'd like to be aware of others that might do the same or similar thing.

All part of the Paragon Hard Disk Manager suite. In the older ones they have the P2P Adjust OS Wizard (physical 2 physical) which will change out drivers to make the OS boot on different hardware. I find I don't have to use it too much for Windows 7 and up. Mainly have to do it on XP. If I find the OS is not booting after doing the P2P or it won't boot in the first place I try the Boot Corrector wizard. In newer paragon the P2P adjust is "Migrate OS" and they have a P2V migration as well.

Sorry for the delayed reply...

1) It stings the nostrils.

2) I'm not gonna lie to you Brian, that smells like pure gasoline!

3) The only issue I can forsee with actually running the XP machines as VMs on a server of some sort is I'm pretty sure these computers have a serial or some sort of physical connection to the equipment they are controlling....so.....how would that workout?

Thanks!!!
