Hello Everyone,

I Dont know much when it comes too computers and Im in need of a new one. Im mostly going to play games. I have my eye on this PC from gate way. A close friend of mine who says he can build me a better one that can out perform it.

Well im not sure soo I need your help please?

Gateway PC: http://www.buy.com/prod/gateway-dx4...3-20ghz-8gb-ddr3-1tb/q/loc/101/213819878.html

TOTAL: 814

- VS -

Custom PC:
AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0GHz, 8Mb Cache..............................169.99

Corsair DDR3, 1800MHz 4GB 2x240 DIMM, Unbuffered, 8-8-8-24, XMS3 DOMINATOR with DHX - AMD Phenom II, BEMP Support...............154.99

Seagate Barracuda (ST3500418AS) 7200.12 SATA 3.0Gb/s 500GB 16MB Cache (OEM)................................................................................45.99

HIS H577QT1GD Radeon HD 5770 IceQ 5 Turbo Video Card - 1GB GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0, CrossFireX Ready.........................................220.00

Asus M4A79XTD EVO Socket AM3 AMD 790X Chipset + ATI SB750 Dual-Channel DDR3 1800(O.C.)................................................102.99

TOTAL: 803.95

Im still debating because the other PC got A WHOPPING 8 GB OF RAMM!!:eek::eek: How can that out perform the custom built one? Plus wouldnt gateway be more reliable then the custom?

I want to believe my friend but i have a feeling that gateway is much more reliable then my friend's custom built. Can the gateway PC's play all of the modern games? Lets take COD- Modern Warfare 2 can the gateway play with max settings? Or Im i better going off with the cheaper friends custom built. I want my PC to last too.

Please advise me on what i should do from here on.

PS- 8 GB OF RAMMM HOLY SMOKERS! :D

Custom build my man... NEVER buy mass manufactured computers. If need be, I can list 100 reasons why not 2.

"wouldnt gateway be more reliable then the custom?"

no... well sorta... but at what price? keep in mind that all mass manufactured computers "strip" their drivers for video, motherboard, chipset, etc, etc to lower support cost. In return you don't get the performance the hardware was designed for. Depending on ur budget... you can save many and get more performance if you custom build the PC correctly. Why not crossfire?

let me know if you have any other questions.

The custom build. The only criticism I would make of that build as a gaming rig is the HDD. Consider a performance hard drive (ie WD Black) or an SSD. It will make the games load faster, and on games where you have to use hdd to load each level, the transition will be a lot quicker.

Re your RAM question - it would be a rare case on most current gaming PC's that you would actually utilise 4gb physical ram most of the time. 8GB sounds impressive but it doesnt yet offer much in the way of significant performance improvement. In 12-18 months time the extra 4gb will probably be more useful, but if you have a decent mobo with enough slots its a simple matter to add more as you need it.

What OS are you going to be running? 32 Bit or 64 bit?

The reason why I ask is that only a 64 bit system can utilize all the RAM (8GB) if you were running any operating system based off the 32 bit operating system scheme all though your rig may have 8GB the OS will only recognize a Max of 4GB thus the extra RAM may look promising but in the end render to be useless unless you plan to go in the direction of upgrading to a 64 bit Operating System.

Food for thought!
