So I'm building a new system for myself. My current pc sounds like a jet engine taking off mostly due to my Ati Radeon 4870x2 2gb video card.

In any case, I've already ordered an I7-3770 (oem) and asus motherboard as well as a new video card (Ati 7970) What I'd like is advice on what would make the CPU itself near silent or at an extremely low noise level.

Any recommendations would be appreciated !

I've got a CM 212 mounted on my i5 2500k, pretty huge fan based cooler. I cant hear a thing though cause the case I put it in is a Define XL It has noise absorbing panels and super quiet fans, I also have 2x ATi 6950's in the case and I cant hear a thing!

Basically an updated version of the Cooler Master Hyper 212+, which is an excellent cooler. It can use 1 or 2 120MM fans in a push/pull/push-pull configuration. It's a huge steal at $30 ($5 MIR) and has about the best performance your going to get with an air cooler. It's also whisper quiet as 120MM fans are much quieter then 80MM fans.

The only thing about this heatsink is that it is VERY big. Make sure your case will accommodate it, as this thing is BIG. Measure before you buy this thing, you don't want to find out too late that this wont fit in your case.

Thanks Suffolk and Brandon. I spotted that cooler yesterday but I was trying to find something a bit easier and not as big. Seems it has good quality and a good price I will just have to make sure I
get a decent sized case. There aren't many other options in that price bracket that compare well.

Definitely getting the cooler master 212 plus.

Thanks!
