My toolkit, and your toolkit.

Ok I have always been told if it was sp1 that was first put in machine you had to have sp1. same with sp2 and sp3.

Now I never triied anything different so I could find I have wrong information (wont be the first time). So if I have XP Home sp2 will that load with the customers sp1 key? If so why don't more tec's carry sp3 instead?

I have had customers with sp1 installed originally, when reinstalling it I use my copy of XP with sp2 slipstreamed. I alway use the customers Windows key and never had a problem. I still don't have enough confidence in sp3 to put it in everything yet.

Do you know if there is a newer version of Daved's or Dave's Ulitimate boot CD 2.0 ? I would like to get anewer version. gjantz

Question

Trent,

Thank you so much for the information. This gives me some ideas of what I need to have with me. I am thinking about starting up my own side business to do exactly what you have described. The one question that I have is how did you go about getting all the OEM Windows Discs?

you better get confident. SP3 is the way to go... and if your clients have any kind of issue and need to call MS, they will no longer support SP2 at the end of the month. Yes XP support has been extended... but only for machines running SP3.

in my kit

This has been a helpful article to me - Because I'm so new I haven't been on that many call outs yet (mostly remote or drop offs) and geographically I live in the bush, so a couple of my calls have been over two hours drive so I take everything I've got and then some.

A female tech is a rare animal in my part of the world so giving an externally professional impression is doubly important in my case and internally doubly difficult because I still lack confidence, so I really have to pack loads of confidence. I don't leave anything behind, I guess the only thing extra I always have on hand is lipstick to put on before I go in and run a brush through my hair, so I present professional and fresh. But I guess you guys can leave that behind ha ha

Oh God, I've never heard of Eddie Izzard. I googled him and saw that he played a transvestite. I'm not sure if you're having a go at me or not, which is probably just as well, I have a good sense of fun. When I was in class studying IT. I was the only female. Every time I left the room, the men would hatch a plan to sabotage my computer. I would come back from lunch to find a blue screen of death or porn on my screensaver. As I sat down at my computer, every bloke in the room had his head down sniggering, waiting to see my response. Even the teacher was cracking up laughing. They could barely hold their sides in to not give the game away. I always just laughed and said "good one guys"

One day I decided I had enough of being the GI Jane of the tech class, while the ring leader was busy, I painted a sign on the back of his car that read "Proud to be Gay". He left college and drove around our local (red neck) town for half the day not knowing it was there. I had finally learned to play with the big boys.

Good one. :D

Classic one, I had a really good laugh on a rather rough friday, tx for the smile ;)

Wanted to share a mini-review for those looking to supplement their toolkit. I needed usb adapters for ethernet and audio, and bought the following:

USB Ethernet Adapter

EU.MARK USB 10/100M RJ45 Ethernet Network Adapter Dongle (MosChip MCS7830)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.22684

Notes: Installation isn't driver-free, but it comes with a disk containing drivers for most modern OSs. Tested operation on Windows 7. You should have seen my eyes bug out as this adapter hit ~24Mbps down on the initial internet speed test, whereas my ave. is ~12.

Be careful if you are shopping for the same. Some other adapters advertise 10/100 speeds or USB 2.0 "compatible", but only operate at the old USB 1.1 spec, for example the TRENDnet USB to 10/100Mbps Adapter TU-ET100C.

Speed tests indicated that this adapter is not a bottleneck and operates as expected and about as well as my laptop's built in ethernet. It's going in the toolbox, so I won't be using it in production and time will tell as to it's reliability - just received both this week.

USB Audio Adapter

Virtual 5.1-Surround USB 2.0 External Sound Card
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.22475

Notes: It's advertised as driver-free installation on modern OSs. Confirmed working as such with Windows 7. Not audiophile quality, but surprisingly enough it actually sounds pretty decent. $2.26 for something that's kicking around in my tech toolkit and only occasionally used isn't bad.

DealExtreme Review
(points may apply to other overseas merchants too):

Pros -

Price: Total inc. shipping for both was $11.05. If you don't need it, buy it and ebay it!
Functionality: Both items arrived in good condition and worked as expected.

Cons -

Shipping: From Hong Kong to CA takes up to a month

Buying from overseas is a gamble. Get the details first. Would they mail another if it's defective or must you return it first? Good question to ask. You may be stuck with it after it arrives if you don't know. But at this price I was willing to give it a chance and I'm happy with both products.

My kit is pretty much the same except i have most of that on my 750GB External, i only carry around some (legit) versions of windows xp sp3, vista sp2, and win 7 pro Universal (Thanks Bryce). I have a pretty extensive list of portable apps that i downloaded (all freeware) that really help me out in emergency situations.

Thanks for bringing this back... the "new guys" on here have trouble finding all the good (great?) threads. I spend a LOT of time on here trying to find all the "nuggets".... It would be great if other "Senior Members" would try to remember some of the "great" threads for us.

I like your list Iisjman007! I too dig around a lot on the forum. Time travelling you might say ;) I also found this gem of a thread some time ago.

Good of you to bring it under attention again! I wasn't even a member/ in business when this thread started ...lol :D

Cheers!

The other "cd ejection tool" looks like a generic interior non keyed locking doorknob "key". . You know, the cheap bathroom door lock where all you need is a tiny screwdriver or paperclip to open.

Edit:: look on top of the trim for youjr bedroom and bathroom doors, I bet you'll find one or something similar
