This device is by a company called syba. It plugs into the usb port of any pc and then hooks onto any drive. Like IDE, Sata, notebook drives, etc. If you follow Jim's advice of having a pc right next to a clients pc you are working on, so you can just run a cable across and "slave" the clients drive for virus scans, this device makes it easier.
It's item # N82E16812186036 on newegg.com for $13.00 some people have found it for less or more at other sites. The device has a power adaptor and multiheads, so you just plug it into the pc you will do the scan from and then run the cables over to your clients pc, disconnect their cables, and connect yours. You don't even have to take their hard drive out of their computer. Just run the cables over to their computer, and remove viruses while their hard disk remains screwed into their case.

Hate to break it to ya but I think most of us already have one of these. And in most cases, you do actually have to take the harddrive out, esp with laptops.

Also, unfortunately not all HDD's can be powered via USB. Especially 3.5" IDE's.

The only real solution is to buy an External IDE hard drive enclosure, a 2.5" & 1.8" IDE adapter, as well as an External SATA I/II enclosure...may also want to look into "Mini SATA" adapter as well, but that's a very rare item to bump into.

Actually it only uses USB for the interface to the PC, it uses a separate adaptor for power.

I didn't even finish reading the post, I went very excited to check new egg for this item and............oh surprise, I already have one  lol

that's a must have for a technician, thanks anyway

yea i have 2 sets one for office and one for work van i got on ebay for pretty cheap just search for 'sata to usb' or something to that effect

The one I have will connect to all 3 types of hard drives and has an external power source. That thing really comes in handy. Anyone know of one that has Esata or SATA out?

Rosewill makes one of these which is one of the best I've seen in many years and works well for not much money, don't much care for the other brands and have had issues with a few of the others.

Rosewill RCW608 is the part #

Yes, I posted that for the ones that didnt have one. Just b/c you know about something or just b/c you have something doesn't mean everyone else knows about it or has it, if that were the case then we wouldn't need the forum to share information to begin with, so I find your reply unnecessary as well as redundant.

I agree you have to take the drive out with laptops, and I think everybody knows that who has ever worked on a laptop.

I completely disagree that you always have to take the drive out of a desktop or tower case. With these cords, I frequently leave the drive in there and just run the power and data connection over.

As you may have read in previous members posts, this saves time.

JosephLeo a product link to yours maybe?

Ahh, didn't notice that.

Still, I like my solution better since I got everything covered.

I don't know anything about your solution. What are you using JosephLeo? Why do you like it better? Fill us in, if you have something better, please share. :)

Yes you are right, it IS a must have for a technician. p.s., glad you already have one. :)

Thanks Studiot, The Magic Bridge looks like a good quality adapter. The one I currently use feels cheap and flimsey. I will be adding that too my shopping list. :)

I had one of those Ebay things called EZEide a few years ago. It was rather unreliable being choosy about which drives it would work with and which it would refuse.

So I could never trust it as I couldn't tell if any problem came from the drive or the device itself - not good for testing drives.

But I have found the magic bridge to be both reliable and robust in plugging/unplugging.

Also have one of those SATA dock things wish there was an IDE equivalent.

Well- let me go back ;)

I have two External Hard Drive adapters. 1 for 3.5" IDE, and another for Dual 2.5" & 3.5" SATA I & II.

On top of this, I have a 2.5" IDE to 3.5" IDE as well as a 1.8" IDE to 2.5" IDE. Both of which plug into my 3.5" IDE external hard drive adapter so that I may have support for those older and rarer hard drives.

Although- I may consider tossing the two external hard drive adapters for the product that was first mentioned and keep my 1.8" and 2.5" IDE adapters. I don't have any links for my stuff but Newegg might have them.

I have a computer dedicated to backing up hard drives. If I can't back up over my network using UBCD4WIN, I just pull the hard disk and whack it in to my Recovery PC. The computer has bench space and always has a spare ide cable and sata cable (or docking bay). I have some 2.5in to 3.5in adapters for ide notebook drives and that pretty much covers me. I haven't had the pleasure of backing up a 1.8in device yet.

I just use one of the ex-lease pcs that you pick for less than a hundred dollars.

Cheers,

Apochimongitus.
