Musical Technibblers?

The thing I do lack, is musical creativity
In the current news are articles about the early death of Scott Weiland and his struggles with a lifetime of addiction. I suspect a number of musicians get their inspiration from being high on one thing or another. Back in the sixties some were known for dropping acid.

I watch the various singing shows - The Voice, The X-Factor (from various English speaking countries) and they often speak of the nerves that affect the contestants. Got me to thinking that the drugs and/or alcohol is what helps some overcome the 'nerves'.
I never had a problem with nerves with playing an instrument and they would affect me when singing a solo as a young person.

Never considered this. Good thinking. I can play beautifully but then as soon as I know my OH is listening I made mistakes. I would love to have the nerve to play one of those random public pianos you see, but I feel I would let myself down. I shall remain a front room "Billy Joel"!

Went and saw AC/DC live in Melbourne last night, was freaking awesome. Great stage show and presence and great seats to boot. Pity beer cost about $10 per cup.

Yes -I'm with you. Curse you stage fright - or whatever that is! The last time I played publicly a few years ago, I took one of my wife's valiums - didn't really help. I just play for my own amusement now. In the 30 seconds of free time I had last week I was tinkering around with the chords from Bill Evans' "So What". Not my usual diet for the piano, but neat stuff.

Speaking of jazz, has anyone seen the film "Whiplash" from last year? Difficult to watch but really well done. What's-his-name-Farmers-insurance-commercial-guy should have won an Oscar.

Edit: J.K. Simmons - I can never remember his name. Recommended.

Oh, nice - thanks for that, Caroline. The slow, long lead in reminds me a bit of Erik Satie's Gymnopedies. You should give those a try - a lot of emotion in so very few notes. Oh, the angst! :) And Debussy's Claire De Lune - makes me cry every time I hear it.
Claire de lune is on my 2016 list, I can do the first few bars ok.

I've done one of the Gymnopedies, don't ask me which one lol!

Happy new year !

I'm not very good, but I have a good time. Only do originals. I hate to sing. Guitars mostly but a little keyboards (meaning I push on the keys and if it doesn't sound good I move my fingers somewhere else....) and drum machine (heh). Self-taught. Started with a Baritone Uke years ago.
Linkage anyone? I'll show you mine if you show me yours! Guess I'll be brave.

And messing around a bit more on keyboards. Not sure why I recorded this. Stuck in my head I guess.....

With software like Ardour and Mixcraft, there's no reason not to record if you play.

If I haven't already said it, I used to sing backup. But to play the bass guitar (4-string) takes a lot of concentration on my part and if I tried to sing while playing I'd lose my place on the fretboard. So people like Geddy Lee just amaze me that they can play so well and sing at the same time.

Right now I can play my Sirius radio in my Towne & Country mini-van. That's the most action my playing fingers get at the moment. Still haven't had anything out of their cases for quite some time.
