Hello all

I am having a problem with some computers (windows xp pro) that remote into the main server(microsoft server 2003). the problem is that they have lost TCP/IP v4. I went looking for TCP/IP v4 but could only can see TCP/IP v6 in network protocols.

The computers cannot connect the internet but get emails.

Thankyou in advance for your help

Ben

What happens if you try to install TCP/IP via the interface?

If it doesn't appear, how about try this manual install?

Code:
rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 C:\WINDOWS\inf\nettcpip.inf

(D7 does this for you as part of the reset networking interfaces function)

thankyou foolish tech

i have tred that still not showing up TCP/IP v4

it is showing
Microsoft TCP/IP v6
Network Monitor Driver
NWLink IPX/SPX/Netbois Compatible Transport Protocol

Under what adapter are you looking for IPv4?

Do the following on a command prompt

ipconfig /all >> c:\ipconfig.txt

and copy/paste the contents of ipconfig.txt here :)

ipconfig

This is your IPv4 :)

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2 should have the properties for it.

That's a real low resolution screenshot :)

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) should be the standard version 4 TCP/IP properties.
Can you open the properties for that and take another screenshot?

For some reason the interent was going throught a poxy. A friend of mine told me to go a check to see if it was using a poxy or not and it was.

Your ACTUAL problem is unrelated to the problem you posted about; a pRoxy should have been one of THE first things you checked.

I'm not trying to offend you, but you obviously aren't a technician yet. This forum is not for end users, only PC technicians and business owners. That's what makes us unique; there are dozens (or hundreds who knows) of forums out there from majorgeeks to bleepingcomputer that you are probably better suited to be posting in.

I'm not "Mr. Networking" but how would having a proxy set up in your system prevent IPv4 from showing up?

(Oh, and if you didn't set up that proxy, scan for viruses)

IPv4 was never gone I believe. It's just mentioned as Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) on his systems.

Ok, this is just a bad diagnostic because the tech didnt understand what he was looking at.

The "fix" was the proxy setting, but I hope the tech came away having learned something AND the tech should now realize he has to spend more time understanding the differences in what you see in the internet settings in xp, vista and 7.

Every time you make a bad diagnostic you should revisit the steps you took and what you did wrong and fill in the blanks of your knowledge so that you do not make the same mistakes again. We all make mistakes, but to improve your skills and knowledge you have to understand the whats and whys of your mistakes.

When I just started out I was getting my troubleshooting advice from those who hired me. It's all part of training to do a job. When no one was available I moved on to the next problem until someone could help me with where I was stuck. That was before the internets......

I guess if you're just starting out these days and no one is around to help you, then you always have google... search for: no internet troubleshooting, something like that.
