Done a N&P on a Windows 8.1 machine so I could put the legal OS. It is an HP i5 (Pavilion) can't remember the exact model number.

I have downloaded all the drivers from the HP website, however there is still an unknown device showing up in device manager. Now I know there is software which will tell me what drivers are missing, but I can't remember what it is called.

Obviously google just points to all the fake driver software. Any ideas?

Thanks

Try getting the hardware id for the from the properties > details > hardware id from drop down?

So the above on the item that appears to be missing and Google the hardware id.

Sorry don't know the software i would love to know what it is though!!!

Thanks, turns out it is fitted with an accelerometer to detect sudden movement so it can quickly park the HD. That was the driver that was missing.

Plug you ID numbers into this website http://www.pcidatabase.com/ and it will give you manufacturer/product details of the unknown device. If it doesn't 'nail it' it will get you close and you should be able to recognize the required driver from the list on the PC manufacturers website.

3DPChip VERY rarely has let me down, and that usually on some off the way Sony or something.
I pack it around on my keychain thumbdrive now.

we use dev and ven numbers via pcidatabase.com. have done this for years and very reliable.

if in doubt we just scan with driveragent.

certainly, searching for drivers can be very time consuming. Usually I will give it 15 mins, and after that just driveragent it then "download all".

We do pretty much the same thing, except we use Driver Easy instead of Driver Agent.
