Microsoft Is Bringing the Start Menu Back

This is not another thread about replacement start buttons. It looks like the Windows Update for 8.1 due out anytime is bringing the start menu back.

Windows 8.1 is getting some upgrades really soon, but Microsoft also announced a future upgrade to Windows 8 that everyone's been asking for: the return of the desktop Start menu.

As if you haven't already replaced the Start menu on your own, Microsoft says they'll be bringing back the Start menu in a future update. It looks similar to the old one, but with a small tiled interface tacked on the side, which is actually pretty cool. Microsoft will also let tiled "Modern" apps run in a window on the desktop (which you can currently do with ModernMix). Better late than never, perhaps, but if you aren't doing this already with apps like Start8 and ModernMix, it's a nice upgrade we suppose.

So then what does Windows 9 look like? They need to have these apps be able to run on the desktop in a window.

Well thats surprising. Seriously you could knock me over with a feather right now.

[sarcasm]

And its only taken, what, two years for them to listen to what the entire technical and end-user populations of the planet have been telling them from its inception?

Impressive

Maybe if we give them another 2 years they might fix Safe Mode so it works?

Next year

Unfortunately, we won't see this in the Windows 8.1 update being released next week. More than likely we won't see this until late this year or early next and will probably be Windows 9 (or whatever they choose to call it).

Couldn't be! All the techs on here said they would never do it. Microsoft knew what was best for us all and that was a life free of menues damn it!

When can I officially say I told you so?

You can say it when we actually see what "Start Button" means in MS speak this time.

Remember, they brought the Start Button back in 8.1 too . . .

Agreed.

It figures they had to leave those goofy tiles on the right side of the start menu. They're still trying to force that Metro nonsense on people.

Yep. I'm still a bit of a skeptic on this. They still have too much invested to give up on this completely. And the pictures make it look like somekind of weird start menu with a mini me metro app tagged on.

The real test will be to see if Metro apps act just like regular windows apps do when they are not full screen on the desktop. Will they get an icon in the taskbar like running Windows apps do? Or will it still be the schizophrenic two personality metro vs aero desktop.
