Never used the home server before just wanted to get a discussion going on what the pros and cons are and how I might market such a device to home users.:)

Main advantage is centralized storage of music, videos, and documents along with back up abilities. Microsoft has some good material on it if I am not mistaken on a website of thiers. It is also fairly simple to put together and can be done on a fairly low budget.

Ah, it's okay

It's very vista-ish. Also kind of server 2008-ish. But not in good ways.

I had some experience with one at a client site, it's great for sharing/centralizing video and music, has a web-sharing service that's not well explained but touted as a feature. You really need to read the docs to get an idea about how to set this up right, and the documentation is pretty weak.

User management is horrible. Permissions management is oversimplified which makes setting permissions harder if you want any kind of fine control.

I have no idea what kind of DRM is on it but I have to think it's pretty invasive.

I don't think I would install one of these in a home with non-tech oriented people. My client said that the setup wizards are pretty good, but after he did that, he was calling me to manage the thing because it's not clear what the heck the home user is supposed to do after that, or how to change any of the settings.

Sorry so long...
