Microsoft has published the minimum CPU requirements for Windows 11

I expected more than a 1-liner but to save others the time here it is -

"Microsoft has published the minimum CPU requirements for Windows 11. According to the compatibility lists, Windows 11 will require at least an 8th generation Intel processor or a 2nd generation AMD Ryzen/EPYC processor. "

Well, if they stick to this then they are definitely not trying to have widespread adoption of Windows 11.

Oh, this launch, if not Windows 11 itself, has already turned into a complete sh*t storm.

So MS is trying to push the market to the generation of CPUs that cut power consumption. 8th gen onward, and the equivalent AMD stuff use vastly less power than the predecessors. The refurb market should have ready access to these platforms within 12 months based on normal replacement cycles of large corporations.

Intel's 11th gen desktops are so well-known for their power efficiency under load! :)

It appears my 7700K relic will make do with Win10 a while longer out of necessity!

It's about TPM for security. I'm not sure when Intel processors incorporated TPM but based on MS statement I'd say 8th gen.

TPM 2.0 started with Generation 6 CPUs. But they were very much not normal until generation 8. And it's completely normal to have 10 and 11 generation stuff on mainboards without TPM modules.

So anyone that wants to push, is going to be replacing a mainboard or begging for a TPM module from their mobo manufacturer.

I imagine Home will stick to the above mentioned boiler plate repertoire, while Pro users may have more slack.

In a way, I'm kinda glad that MS has set clear guidelines for CPU. In the past, PC Makers have made some truly abominable machines by taking a CPU outside of it's intended market for the purpose of making cheap PC's. Remember AMD E-1/E300 etc.? If I'm correct, they were never intended for mainstream use, they were for Thin Clients where you would have a specific use case scenario etc. But nope, Acer and Lenovo had to make $299 and $399 bundles of eWaste for the masses.

And there still isn't, that steaming pile of garbage called Windows 11 certainly isn't a reason. Run it in a VM to get familiar with it, but there's no reason to upgrade to it unless you have no choice.

My licenses are from my Action Pack, I'm also a partner of record. That agreement requires me to be on the most recent. It's not terribly well enforced, but it's also not a great idea for someone doing what I do to be using "old" software. I need to know the new before my clients do.

The licensing agreement for the Action Pack licenses I use on that bare metal?
Huh, didn't know that. I'm glad I don't have to work under those restrictions.

Besides, there are vastly different levels of knowledge to be gained in testing vs actual use.
You can "actually use" a VM if you so choose. They're not just for testing. I guess I forget that most people don't have my improvisational skills and memory when it comes to learning new software. I don't have to do the same tasks over and over and over again in order to learn software like most people do. If I do something one time, it's memorized unless it's super complicated. I'm hoping I won't lose that ability in my old age, but I probably will. I forget how old you are but I'm approaching 30 now so I might start feeling it soon.

@sapphirescales It's not repetition, it's exposure. The new platform will have its own quirks and issues to be overcome. It'll start out similar enough to Win10 to not matter, but every patch every month that gap will widen. I've learned every Microsoft OS via this process of immersion... I'm not about to change that pattern now.

No VM will give you the experience of real hardware. Besides unless they have some killcode in Windows 11 I expect that it will run just fine on 7th gen it will just not be officially supported. This is M$ tossing a smoke bomb and yelling fire to benefit sales of new pcs.

Just wait for a PCIe card or USB device that emulates TPM enough to make it work anyway... the market is a magical place!
