Method used for imaging

I have used DDrescue on stubborn drives to perform a pseudo "data recovery". Sometimes if our data recovery software won't go as a last ditch effort I image it to a bench drive and then can copy the data from there.

DDRescue is a last resort solution as can take forever to image a fubar HDD

Curious to know what you consider first? If the drive is fubar, taking forever to image with ddrescue, no other software solution is an option. If you have a hardware imager, that that would be a better first choice, assuming the customer considers the data not worth the cost of recovery by a specialist.

If you're running it with the default options or through one of the GUIs, yes. That's where you want to read through the man pages and use the log file so you can do multiple passes from the command line - one to read everything that comes through without errors but doesn't try to deal with bad sectors, then a second pass with some of the options for retrying on error to do cleanup.

I did some testing of netjapan"s ActiveImage Protector. We make images of everything and use imaging solutions for all our client"s backups. We were looking for software that was cost effective and did full images that could be spun up to a virtual machine quickly and easily. This worked as they said it would. Easy to use and it took the image from a usb drive and booted out up using VM ware in one step. Adding this to my tool bag and will do more testing but looks good so far

For imaging a drive before doing any maintenance - Drive Snapshot. Works from within Windows (using VSS) or can be run from a Win PE environment for systems that won't boot. You can easily mount the saved image as a drive to view / retrieve individual files.

We are now using netjapan IT pro edition as part of the action pack. Works well so far and there is a major update out soon
