Maximum PC - 20 Must have Firefox add-ons

Firefox is too bloated and slow for me anymore. I use Chrome and couldn't be happier. I don't like using tons of plugins / addons either, though. Pretty much I use just the Google ones (gmail notifier, voice notifier, and calendar). One feature I love about Chrome is the synchronize option. It keeps my bookmarks the same at work and at home.

I don't want to steer this thread in the wrong direction, but I agree with NeutronTech that firefox is too bloated and now I use chrome as well. I like the way you just click the icon and POOF, it's on screen

I just use Chrome for my Gmail, Contacts & Calendaring - Firefox for everything else, but I'm coming round to the idea of going 100% Chrome

I like chrome but wouldnt be without my add ons. They are the main reason I havent shifted away from FF for any length of time over the years. I use many of the tools from the link and wouldn't want to surf without them! :)

my favs are

adblock plus

greasemonkey - I use a couple of small google scripts and a thing called textarea resize which allows you to resize text boxes so its easier to see all of what you have typed rather than scrolling a lot. Theres also a script I use for WhirlPool Forums her in Oz which makes the site a lot more useable. Greasemonkey is an incredibly powerful add on and I have seen no performance using it (most of the scripts are only a few k in size)

Autopager (dont think this was in the list but makes browsing a hell load easier by automatically loading pages so you dont have to click 'next' at the bottom of each page like in a forum)

Lastpass -very handy for web forms and to remember passwords

Xmarks - I use this in Portable Firefox, so when I go to a site, all my tech bookmarks are sync'd. Its also handy when moving between PC's.

As far as speed goes, I think it depends on what you're running it on. I also use Opera occasionally - which admittedly is quicker - but not so much quicker that I would go back to using a vanilla browser. Its really a very subtle difference IMO. Some addons will give more of a performance hit than others. If you keep the installs to sensible limits its not an issue in my experience.

Thanks for the link. Interesting stuff :)

I guess I'll be the odd one out. I don't like chrome. Its fast and thats about it. Even then its not the fastest. It offers no useful extentions or plugins like firefox does, and it has processes running in the background even when the browser is not running. I have a relatively slow 10meg connection and can see very little difference in speed between chrome and my tweaked FF.

I have to agree with gunslinger. I use FF most of the time, but have been using Opera for a few months now, and love it.

Both FF, and Opera are part of my suite of progs installed on pc's which come in here. Personally I don't really like chrome. Tried it when it first came out. It probably has got a lot better over time, but I am still to give it another shot.

The extensions I have on FF, are Adblock+, greasemonkey, and a download manager. thats about it.

I exclusively use FF with NoScript...at the very least.
From time to time I like to try different add-ons.

I am not too concerned about having the ultra fastest browser as long as it provides decent speeds, it meets my needs and I could choose which browser to use then it is all good.

Firefox or Chrome, but with the following add-ons:

Adblock
Web Of Trust (WOT) [essential for any browser]
FlashBlock (blocks anything flash, until you simply click on it. NO page reload required.)

I used to be a firefox addict, but now I primarily use chrome. Mainly because firefox took longer to initially load, and I like the minimalist interface of chrome.

It offers no useful extentions or plugins like firefox does, and it has processes running in the background even when the browser is not running.

Most of the popular extensions are available for both browsers. Then each of them has their unique ones as well. Firefox also has a process running in the background all the time, after the first load. One thing about Chrome, though, is that it runs a different process for each tab.... which is kind of strange. I also don't really notice much of a difference in browsing speeds between the browsers. The slowness I was referring to was the load up time. It's can be hard, sometimes depending on the customer, to convince them that it's better to use FF after they just paid you for a tuneup and now their browser takes 4 times longer to load.

Anyway, that was off topic. My main point was that Chrome has pretty much the same extensions as FF.

NoScript-Needs to be built in and defaulted on. But then I guess we'd lose a lot of business if that happened.

Adblock Plus-This one will spoil you. I can't stand to use a browser without this now. It always freaks me out when I realize just how much crap this filters out of my life.

Greasemonkey-There are some people doing really cool stuff with this. From general tweaks to the way the browser works to scripts that make individual websites much more functional.

Xmarks Sync-Absolutely love it. That site I bookmarked last night at home is automatically in the same place on my portable version when I open it up the next day. And when my main box crashed a couple of weeks ago, I was able to install FF on my test box and have my bookmarks back in minutes. I think this is a good one for everyone to set up for their customers. Helps prevent them from losing several years of saved bookmarks. Imagine what a hero you'll be when you magically restore all of the bookmarks they though they lost when their system crashed.

Tab Mix Plus-Somewhat redundant nowadays, but still a lot of useful tab tweaks. But if you just want to add a certain feature to your tabs, you better off looking for a plug-in that does just that.

WoT-My personal feeling is that NoScript and ABP make this irrelevant, But I guess it's useful if you want to leave scripts and ads on.

Download Statusbar-Addresses fact that the stock download function sucks. There are several variants and I personally use Download Manager Tweak, but there's probably something that's better than the default that suits your persona needs.

LastPass Password Manager-I see the appeal, but I don't use this or the Xmarks password function. I prefer KeePass with the password file stored in My Dropbox account.

FoxyTunes-Love it and it works with any music player worth using.

WebMail Notifier-At the office it's fairly useless. But at home, where there's a dozen or so email accounts on 3 different services, it's brilliant.

Extensions that need to be on the list:

Beef Taco (Targeted Advertising Cookie Opt-Out) Don't let the marketing people track you.

Context Search-allows you to use all of your installed search engines from the context menu and not just the one currently selected.

Quick Restart-As many have noted, FF does suffer from some bloat. And if I notice it dragging the system, I hit the button and restart. Easier than waiting for the bloat situation to fix itself.

URL Flipper-get through slide shows and the like with more ease as you have your own forward and back buttons that will always be in the same place.

Ill be the real odd man out I hate FF w/ a passion I much prefer IE to FF. I also don't like Chrome but then agian I so far dislike every thing Google has done exluding thier search engine. I mostly use Opera though I really like it so far I downloaded it to test some things for work and ended up switching to it. We all know that Safari just doesn't count :D

I'd have to say Safari is better that everything but FF. :D

Ad Block plus is the reason why I stick so heavily to FF

I put it on EVERY single computer I touch and give EVERY single customer the comparison between IE and FF on myspace.com (even though its a dead zone it still has great advertisements that go away!). Ive been doing this as far back as I can remember and I still haven't had a customer complaint on re-infection or any infection (outside of limewire) ever.

Chrome has AB+ as well.

I can't stand to use a computer now that doesn't have AB+. I'm astounded at how much ad crap people put up with on a daily basis.
