I just returned from the Apple store (I'd never been in one before, and the place was an absolute nuthouse), where I had that Macbook mentioned in a previous thread diagnosed.

-Bad news: it is a dead logic board, and the warranty is expired.

-Worse news: it does not seem to be caused by the Nvidia GPU problem that would been a free replacement.

Good news: the girl who helped me said "I'm going to have it replaced for free anyway."

My respect for Apple just leaped by orders of magnitude, and I'm going to be recommending Macs even more often than before. I hope they keep kicking Microsoft's butt right down the street, though with customer service like this, I'm sure they won't need my hope.

Thanks, Apple!

Glad you had a good experience, I have always found Apple to be helpful in these situations. Sometimes you need to find the right person, but with a little work they are usually really good to repair their products. If you buy one, I highly suggest the apple care, it is a real life saver with no hassles. :p

Glad to hear it worked out. I bet it's because that machine had that Nvidia chip but wouldn't POST, so they couldn't prove if the chip was faulty or not. Usually there has to be a validation code from testing the chip to qualify for a replacement. Apple corporate stores must have a little more freedom in getting free replacements. I've been able to push a couple through without providing validation codes. But on questionable ones like that I've had to mail them into the repair depot and request a review by Apple.

I had a 3 1/2 year old MBP whose battery wouldn't hold a charge. Popped into the Apple store and they replaced it with a brand new one for FREE. It was out of warranty and I had no Apple Care. Now that is customer service. I think us techs could learn alot of lessons from how Apple treats its customers

Living in a regional centre, we only just got our first apple store, and it's not in the main cbd but a shopping centre in a suburb.

In the CBD, we have 2 authorised repairers - and both of them could learn a lesson from mcdonalds staff about how to treat customers! I've considered becoming authorised just to take the business away from them that they would clearly lose - I don't recall *ever* hearing a good word about the service either provides!

I was going to go into an anti-apple rant, but that's another story for another day...
