Customer has macbook pro. Recently he is not able to make an online credit card purchase using his Visa card. American Geographic subscription from memory. The error message is "Could not authenticate" and does not enlighten us any further. His daughter is able to make purchases using the same card on a different computer. We tried a different wifi hotspot with the same results. I can't think of anything else to try, it all seems to come down to his laptop. Anyone got any ideas I can try out?

You mean cached CC info in the browser? I'd delete it from the browser, restart, the buy it again manually putting in the CC info.
Everything was manually entered twice. He watched me type it in from the physical card.

He mentioned that he's been able to make purchases on other sites so it's just this one place. I'll double check to see if this exact purchase can be made from another computer.

I'd try a private window then. Easy way to launch a completely clean webpage session without resetting the browser. That's solved rare login problems for me in the past.

There is expired Trend Micro installed.

And a faint whiff of cordite*?

I'd remove this before trying anything else. Trend generally includes a credit card blocking module (Pay Guard) and there's no knowing what it'll do if its licence has lapsed. Actually, that's true even if the licence hasn't lapsed - the best thing you can say about Trend is that it's profitable.

Agreed and yeah that crossed my mind, though I couldn't see any such module plus he's been able to do other credit card transactions. And then I remembered I don't know how to uninstall applications on a Mac. I remember him saying the Trend thing has been expired for a while but this credit card issue is only new, but it's an annual subscription so....

And what version of the OS does he have? Safari updates along with the OS, so it might be an older version of Safari that is being rejected by that site.

The answer to @nlinecomputers question, can that exact transaction to the same company be achieved on another computer, the answer is yes. I suppose this means there's no imperative to actually solve this problem.

But if I do go back, there are two things I need to know:

1. How to uninstall Trend
2. Find the OS version
