Mac Software Virtual Machine

Anyone know of a way to run Mac OS in a virtual machine to gain experience with it or any other way of gaining experience with the OS without having to buy a Apple?

Thanks.
Chris

Will the newest Mac OSX run in a virualized environment on an intel processor? And if so, what are the requirements?

requirements

Not sure on the requirements...

I have the new version of the macbook pro and I have installed Virtual box which runs Windows XP and it works fabulous. I have 4GB of ram and I have had 2 or 3 virtual machines running and no issues.

You guys are talking about using the wrong OS to virtualize the other wrong OS. The question was to virtualize OS X on a Windows Machine.

Here's the correct and legal answer: No.

Here's the illegal but technically possible answer: Yes.

Legally you're only allowed to run OS X on Apple hardware. However, with the right "PC" hardware, you can run OS X that's been slightly modified or you can download a PPC emulator to run an older version VERY SLOWLY. Just go buy a super cheap Mac on ebay. You can get a decent G4 or G5 for only a couple hundred.

There are a couple of hacked up crippled vmware images out there but there a waste of time. I spent weeks trying to get OSX to work in virtualbox and could never get passed the ACPI and kernel panics. Until virtualbox supports modified BIOS images its not going to be possible. It was going to happen at one point but virtualbox just stopped development on it. It might have been because of pressure from Apple.

Thats not exactly true. I am running an unmodified OSX 10.5 on a Dell mini 10v. If you use the latest copy of netbook bootmaker it will let you load it with an unmodified OSX DVD. Of course you still need to use the chameleon bootloader to make the system boot, I would recommend this bootloader even if your using a genuine MAC I love how it identifies the partitions for what OS is installed. If you use a system with the right hardware its quite fast. My Dell Mini runs OSX very well.

I'm aware of the bootloaders and all that and frankly it's a matter of semantics if it's "modified" or not.

The main point that I was making is that it's illegal. I don't see how it's ok to discuss the topic when, no matter how grey it may be, when there is a rule about discussing pirated software and the like. It's no different than telling someone how to bypass Windows activation.

It has nothing to do with pirating software. I purchased a retail copy of OSX and installed it using an image of the unmodified DVD. I may not have followed the license agreement but that does not mean I stole the software.

The Dell idea sounds tempting. I want to learn how to support Macs...but I don't feel like buying a used computer, and I'm not shelling out nearly a grand for a Macbook.

Wow the topic isn't about pirating software but merely using software to emulate in a virtual environment. You really should lighten up.
